Trump technically obese, despite doctor's clean bill of health

A four-pound weight gain over the last year makes the president obese under the official definition of the term.

President Donald Trump gained four pounds over the last year, according to a new assessment from his doctor, a weight increase that makes him technically obese.
But Trump's doctor, Sean Conley, nonetheless determined that the president "remains in very good health overall" in a memorandum released by the White House on Thursday.
Conley recorded Trump's height as 6'3" and his weight as 243 pounds. Last year, the president clocked in at 239 pounds, according to an assessment by his former doctor, Ronny Jackson.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that a body mass index of 30.0 or higher falls into the obese range. Based on his current height and weight, Trump's body mass index is 30.4, putting him across the obesity threshold. Obese people are at increased risk of a slew of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke. .........

That said, I really have no problem criticizes the man's appearance after the way he's treated women his entire life. He is truly a horrible person.

(37,648 posts)Morbid obesity is a health issue. As is age. Especially when the President lies about his health and goes to the extreme to produce fake doctor reports.

(34,403 posts)Four pounds a month, maybe. He looks awful--bloated, dissipated. He's aging as much as other presidents have, but this time it's not from work--it's the junk food and guilt catching up with him.

(11,949 posts)Of course, to my grandmother I would look like a 50 something year old guy should!
I can understand the people on DU who see this as fat shaming which is never cool.
But I do not read it as shaming of his weight, but the inherent hypocrisy that oozes from his every word especially when he comments on female appearances or men who are shorter than average.
We have seen that the only thing that gets under his skin, and makes his supporters quail is ridicule. So while 2 years ago I would be highly offended if a common nickname for him became President Lardass, today I would help spread it.
Ive had enough of going high. I am at the kick them in the balls stage.

(7,412 posts)Even now at 5'10" 185 pounds wearing 32 inch waist jeans lol (she's almost 100 now and still kicking). I'm a lighter guy than almost everyone I know my age and I am "overweight" on the government BMI chart at like 27. I guess the government thinks we should all be under 150 pounds or something.

(11,949 posts)511, very big boned, 180lbs, all legs and shoulders, 32 inch jeans and doing very physical work all day, my grandmother thought I needed to find a wife to feed me up!
I found a wife. And I do all the cooking!
Now at 53 years old, still 511 on a good day and pushing 230 my grandmother might be satisfied. Unfortunately she has not been around for 25 years.
She was born in, as she would say, aught 6, meaning 1906. Poor and in the south. Extra weight was extra insurance against extra hard times!
Sounds like our grandmothers were similar!

(25,862 posts)we've forgotten how much thinner most people used to be. For anyone who graduated high school before 1975, take a look at your high school yearbooks. You will see very few overweight classmates, and probably no one who is obese. Compare that to now. It's discouraging, isn't it?

(7,412 posts)Forget this guy for a second, not defending him.
For years I have been seeing that obese does not equal unhealthy. By the government BMI calculator I am "overweight' at 185 pounds and 5'10", I still wear 32 inch waist jeans and medium men's shirts, really?
They certainly can, but nothing can make a compulsive liar appear truthful. He would have to go online and alter every photo of him standing next to people who are 6'2" and 6'3". How stupid does he think people are?
Meanwhile, no one can convince me that Donald Trump is in good health and obviously the doctors aren't going to tell us the truth. It isn't just the weight. His terrible eating habits, lack of exercise, sleep deprivation, and type A personality all would contribute to a man in poor health. Its a miracle he hasn't had a heart attack.
I just hate that this will be blasted out everywhere that "Obese=Unhealthy" because that's how it comes across to many.

(47,501 posts)Though I think most people really are thinking about Trump, not necessarily other people who are technically considered overweight. I know a lot of people who are overweight and they don't look anything like Trump.
I really don't like the word "obese" because of the image it brings to mind and it is one that doesn't really apply to most people categorized as "technically obese".
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,862 posts)fine for years.
Have you attended a high school reunion lately? Especially a 40th or 50th? The smokers, those who are still alive, look a minimum of ten years older than the rest of their classmates.
I attended a 50th a couple of years ago, and had a brief conversation with a classmate who had honestly been the prettiest girl in our class. But I didn't recognize her at the reunion. Luckily, she gave me her name. Her voice was terrible, gravelly and hard to listen to. A couple of months later she went into the hospital and died within a few days. Classmates expressed sorrow and shock. I wasn't rude enough to point out how dreadful she'd looked at the reunion.
But there it is. Smoking, obesity, these are things that kill. And don't try to pretend you don't smoke or aren't obese.

(20,202 posts)Is that they do not distinguish lean muscle from fat. A 5' 10" person with a high body fat % would be overweight at 185 lbs, but with a 32 inch waist, that's not you. In fact, your waist could be up to 35" (half your height) and you would still be at a healthy body weight. Abdominal fat is the killer. Trump has it. You don't.

(3,051 posts)Its an outdated measure and particularly inaccurate for large frame men.
Ive been a weight lifter for over 70 years and been told since the 1980s or so (cant remember when BMI became a thing) and breathlessly told that I need to lose weight. Mind you, until I was in my 80s my body fat was less than 15%.
Im officially old as crap now and lost a bunch of muscle after pneumonia last year, but they kept telling me I was a walking heart attack without looking at me, just based on this stupid measuremt.
What matters is your waist size. Period. Keep it below 34-36 or so. Better is body fat percentage. 20% for men and 25 for women.
Now, all that said Trunp is fat. But ignore anything about BMI.

(37,648 posts)Obesity isn't really THAT overfat. Morbidly obese is the really dangerous obesity. No one who is morbidly obese is in excellent health. It's not possible. He can be in good health, for a morbidly obese person.
Morbidly obese persons generally have metabolic syndrome. The trifecta of high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high triglycerides. They also have extra fat around the midsection (this means the internal organs are surrounded by fat, too).
He's at increased risk for diabetes, stroke, heart trouble.
He is probably on multiple medications. What is saving him is that he wasn't obese all his life, IMO. It started when he was already a senior citizen.
He probably also has arthritis, but many if not most his age do, and that's not as serious as the other issues.
Remember when he used a little caddy to tour when he was in Europe with our allies? They all walked. Trump rode around in his little caddy, obviously because he couldn't walk like the others.
