El Salvadors supreme court has overturned a 30-year sentence for a teenage rape victim who was convicted of aggravated homicide after having a stillbirth.
Evelyn Beatríz Hernández Cruz, 19, was found guilty in July 2017 on the grounds that failing to seek antenatal care amounted to murder.
But on Friday the court ordered a new trial for Hernandez, who was released after almost three years in jail. She was greeted by activists chanting Evelyn, you are not alone!
During her trial, Hernandez said she had been repeatedly raped by a gang member and didnt realize she was pregnant.

(23,980 posts)Second, there are many pro-choice Catholics out there (like myself), despite the protestations of many bishops and others. I don't know the numbers for El Salvador, but here in the States, more Catholics identify as pro-choice than anti-choice.
Third, given how many people are fed, clothed, sheltered, and educated by Catholic organizations, ending the Church's positive influence would have disastrous consequences.

I have my own experiences with them to know enough that they do not give one diddly damn about human suffering. Because they've caused plenty of it on their own. Every now and then you meet a good nun. Every now and then you meet a good priest. For the most part it's an organization that should be damned for eternity.
