The United States ambassador dealt another major blow to Colombias peace process on Monday, stating his government supports Colombian President Ivan Duques latest attempt to sink a war crimes tribunal.
In an interview with Blu Radio, US Ambassador Kevin Whitaker said he supported Duques decision to ignore the Constitutional Court and return a statutory bill that defines the powers of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) to Congress.
Duques decision triggered a constitutional crisis and plunged the peace process into its biggest crisis since April last year when the US government requested the extradition of FARC leader Jesus Santrich on an unsubstantiated drug trafficking claim.
. . .
Experts have asked which war criminals Duque is trying to protect in his latest and most devastating attempt to sink the tribunal that seeks to bring justice to the countrys more than 8.5 million victims of the armed conflict.

Colombias foreign minister will meet with the secretary general of the United Nations after the international organization expressed regret over President Ivan Duques refusal to sign off on the countrys war crimes tribunal.
Carlos Holmes Trujillo will visit Antonio Guterres, to explain in detail why Duque chose to fly in face of the the Constitutional Court and return a statutory bill that defines the powers of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) to Congress.
Trujillos visit to New York will be with the purpose of making known the reasons that led President Duque to present the objections, the scope and content of these objections, the minister told Blu, the radio station run by Duques brother in law.
Duque has opposed Colombias peace process since before coming to power last year and in particular the JEP, which could see many of his political allies and economic backers formally linked to war crimes.
