NBC News Apologizes to Affiliates for Sept. 11 Omission

Source: B&C

NBC News took the extraordinary step of apologizing to the NBC affiliate community for its decision not to cut to a Sept. 11 moment of silence on Today, which its network rivals aired.

Steve Capus, president of NBC News, issued the apology and explanation to the affiliates Sept. 12.

"Yesterday, we made an editorial call resulting in the September 11th moment of silence not being seen," read his memo. "While we dedicated a substantial amount of airtime to the anniversary events, we still touched a nerve with many of your viewers... and for that we apologize. At NBC News, have taken great pride in the manner in which we have told the stories of September 11th. From the first moments of the attack, as documented live on Today in 2001...through every anniversary and development since, we are mindful of that legacy and our responsibilities."

USNews.com reports that ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC's cable news channel MSNBC all carried the remembrance live. This is pretty much NBC's third F-up this year. First that deceptive edit of George Zimmerman's phone call to make it seem like he said &quot Trayvon Martin) looks black" without being asked. Then leaving out the 7/7 remembrance from the olympics opening ceremony, controversial tape-delaying tactics, and then cutting to Animal Practice before showing The Who at the closing ceremony. And now interviewing a KARDASHIAN during the 9/11 remembrance? What a new low.

decisions like this are easy. It also helps if you consider your viewing audience to be a group of wholesale imbeciles, who wouldn't know a respectful moment of silence from an air-raid siren. NBC seems geniunly surprised anyone even cared.

But then again, Kardashimom's new jugs look fabulous!

5. How is this an "F-up" on NBC's part?

Jerkoffs who are so butthurt that NBC didn't fall in line with the other faux 'one-day patriots' could have turned to the other 20 channels showing it, or heaven forbid, have their own moment of silence in private...(The same goes for the butthurt over the 7/7 rememberance)

It's almost like some people wouldn't remember to breathe without TV reminding them to..

7. I think the Today show and olympics decisions reflect quite poorly on the network.

It is no secret NBC made many poor primetime programming decisions over the past 5 or so years. Now the news and sports divisions are rotting.

The time it took to write an angry e-mail to NBC would have been better spent on a private moment of silence...

And really? 9/11 and 7/7 aren't tragic enough for moments of silence? Really?

11. OK, for that matter, why didn't EVERY channel on the dial have a moment, then?

since the memory of 9-11 is so significant and anyone not observing properly was in breach of good taste?

12. Not all the broadcast channels have access to network news bureaus.

For example, the CW or independent stations. PBS never shows breaking news live unless it's during the "PBS NewsHour". Fox the broadcast network seldom shows breaking news except live coverage of State of the Union/Election Day/political conventions via Fox News. That is why NBC News showing the 9/11 remembrance on MSNBC but not NBC and showing a freaking KARDASHIAN INTERVIEW during that was so outrageous.
