U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Russian soldiers needed to leave Venezuela, days after a Russian military contingent arrived just outside of Caracas, saying "all options" were open to make that happen.
"Russia has to get out," Trump told reporters during a meeting with the wife of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido - who he called "the first lady of Venezuela." Asked how that could be accomplished, Trump said: "We'll see. All options are open."
Trump and Vice President Mike Pence met with Fabiana Rosales to express support for her husband, who invoked the constitution to assume the interim presidency in January, saying President Nicolas Maduro's re-election was not legitimate.
"The United States views Russia's arrival of military planes this weekend as an unwelcome provocation," Pence told reporters.

(1,237 posts)Actually, they were killed in self defense when they attacked our base in Syria. What actions did Trump take in retaliation to Russia's bold attack against our troops in Syria? Zero, nada! In fact, he bowed to Putin months later in Helsinki.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/24/world/middleeast/american-commandos-russian-mercenaries-syria.html
At 8:30 p.m., three Russian-made T-72 tanks vehicles weighing nearly 50 tons and armed with 125-millimeter guns moved within a mile of the Conoco plant. Bracing for an attack, the Green Berets prepared to launch the reaction force.
At the outpost, American soldiers watched a column of tanks and other armored vehicles turn and drive toward them around 10 p.m., emerging from a neighborhood of houses where they had tried to gather undetected.
A half-hour later, the Russian mercenaries and Syrian forces struck.
The Conoco outpost was hit with a mixture of tank fire, large artillery and mortar rounds, the documents show. The air was filled with dust and shrapnel. The American commandos took cover, then ran behind dirt berms to fire anti-tank missiles and machine guns at the advancing column of armored vehicles.

(1,237 posts)I'll ask again, what actions did Trump take in retaliation to Russia's attack against our troops in Syria? Has Trump ever mentioned it? If he's tough on Russia why wouldn't he codemn a large scale attack against our troops?
And why would you try to spin our troops defending themselves, as an aggressive action towards Russia?

(234 posts)Guaido now has zero standing according to the constitution they used to claim the interim leadership.
To call Ms Rosales Venezuelas First Lady is a joke. Unless one supports tRumpism/foreign intervention.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is militarily ready for a Cuban Missile-style crisis if the United States wanted one and threatened to place hypersonic nuclear missiles on ships or submarines near U.S. territorial waters.

Trump and Putin need to have something they disagree upon to prove to the world they aren't on the same page on things.
And it always happens in Spring, for whatever reason.
In the end, there will be some tough talk and maybe some token action until the next news cycle, when it's all forgotten.
How many people still remember us bombing empty Syrian airfields twice (after we had notified the Russians of our plans, no less)?
Exactly.

(12,690 posts)She says the situation is really scary. The blackouts are lasting for days. People are starving and refrigerating food is accomplished with bags of ice. A small bag goes for $5 and they only accept dollars. Convoys of troops have been passing through her neighborhood in recent evenings. But she had not heard that Russian troops had landed. Her statement something to the effect.. "that can't be good".

(1,568 posts)What is the basis for the statement that Russian troops must leave the country? I'm not defending Maduro or Russian support of Maduro. In fact, I think Russia should remove its troops and pressure Maduro to step down. Much like they should have done in Syria with Assad. But what I think or what anyone else wants may not be in the interest of Maduro or the Russians. So it's expected that Maduro would take actions like requesting Russian support in order to stay in power, and it's expected Russia would do what it feels it has to do to keep their buddy in power. I also understand why the US and certain other countries want Maduro ousted and support the protests and opposition against him. However, what I take issue with is the word 'must'. Why must they? That sounds a lot like a "do it or else" type of statement. What is the argument for why the US or any other nation should be able to make such demands? Is it something that is really worth backing up with action?
