The share of Americans not having sex has reached a record high
Source: Washington Post
The share of U.S. adults reporting no sex in the past year reached an all-time high in 2018, underscoring a three-decade trend line marked by an aging population and higher numbers of unattached people.
But among the 23 percent of adults or nearly 1 in 4 who spent the year in a celibate state, a much larger than expected number of them were twentysomething men, according to the latest data from the General Social Survey.
Experts who study Americans bedroom habits say there are a number of factors driving the Great American Sex Drought. Age is one of them: The 60 and older demographic climbed from 18 percent of the population in 1996 to 26 percent in 2018, according to the survey. The share reporting no sex has consistently hovered around 50 percent, and because that age group is growing relative to everyone else, it has the net effect of reducing the overall populations likelihood of having sex.
But changes at the other end of the age spectrum may be playing an even bigger role. The portion of Americans 18 to 29 reporting no sex in the past year more than doubled between 2008 and 2018, to 23 percent.

(353 posts)There are entire internet communities of "incels" (short for "involuntarily celebate" --sexist assholes who are angry that despite their rotten personalities virgin supermodels are not throwing themselves at them. They all seem to love the Dumpster.

(63,221 posts)It was almost funny, but really it was just pathetic. If only they knew what they sounded like to normal people. And for some reason, they can't seem to understand why women want nothing to do with them. Their misogyny is so blatant that no woman in her right mind would ever give them the time of day. I almost couldn't believe some of the things I was reading. They were that ridiculous.
Unfortunately, I really think men (boys) like that are a danger to society, and I think the republican party has more than it's fair share of them. A number of people in the comment section quoted the statistic in the article that of those young men who reported being celibate over the past year (or longer) over 85% reported being republican, conservative or evangelical. I think sexual frustration is a component of some of this rage they then turn out toward society at large.

(45,442 posts)or is it feminists' fault this time? Affirmative consent is getting in the way?
I think it's very notable that young women are still having lots of sex, probably with each other. While a lot of sexless young men are apparently supporting Trump, joining women-free hate groups like the Proud Boys, and marching in rallies with tiki torches.
Those graphs also seem to show lots of sex during strong economic times, probably due to more marriages and starting families. In downtimes, many young people may feel it's worth saving money first.

(1,718 posts)Social media, online dating and Tinder for starters. There's a massive shitstorm just now because height verification is going to be introduced so guys under 6 feet are going to be filtered out. If you're under the age of 30 life is very, very different compared to what growing up when you were in the 20th century is like.

(1,718 posts)The incel movement turned from an internet joke to a literal terrorist threat nowadays.
ck4829
(35,076 posts)I don't disagree that incels are a terrorist threat though, I've read Rodger's manifesto for example and they describe sex as some sort of panacea for their ills, the dividing line between man and boy, powerful and powerless, etc.
Sexual contact is described according to them as this sort of sacred thing, when the reality of it is, it's actually quite... mundane.
A growing number of Americans though, as described in this article are reflecting the mundane reality of sex, there are other things that can be done, more interesting. These people, men included, are looking at sex and going "meh", I think that's a big distinction from the incel who sees their lack of having sex as some sort of motivator for violence.

(1,718 posts)A lot of guys who still remain virgins into their late 20s and 30s have serious issues stemming from some sort of screwed up childhood that turn them into dangerous, bitter incels. They're just completely cut off from normal society in a way where they can't view sex as mundane and feel that being denied sex is like some massive attack on them from society. Unfortunately I have to deal with guys like this at work often and they're really damaged by it. Short of legalizing prostitution I have no idea how these kind of people can be fixed.

(26,076 posts)Not "getting any" does not make anyone violent and dangerous and a terrorist. Being a sociopath does. These sociopaths just like to blame women for everything, and you did, too. So, do not, and rephrase that.
These sociopaths are almost always violent towards girls and women.
Women who do not "get any" do not do this. Male hormones, etc. do not make these boys and men kill girls and women. Being a sociopath does,
Please, quit validating their "excuses."

"Male hormones, etc. do not make these boys and men kill girls and women"
Apparently you have a different theory apart from 'hormones' as the culprit for what is quite obviously a massive disparity in violence levels when you contrast genders, so I'm asking honestly ... what would that theory be?
Obviously, getting or not getting sex probably doesn't really affect hormone levels, but if anything, I'd guess MORE sex probably raises 'male hormones', so ...
Personally I didn't think the poster was implying 'it's women's fault' ... though they definitely could've emphasized it's 'an excuse', which I wholly agree with
ck4829
(35,076 posts)"Hormones" would be something pointing to nature.
I look at the nurture side of things. I don't disagree with you that there is a disparity, and I think disparities should always be pointed out. But I look at the socialization and learning processes that lead to this, our society creates a psychological problem platter with men to the point that I think being less privileged and making it without ending up in prison or dead can be something of an achievement.
Men are taught that there are things that make you strong and things that make you weak, and buddy, you do not want to do the things that make you weak. Men are taught to not express emotions because it is weak. Men are taught they are entitled to certain things just because they are men. Men are taught threats and violence are acceptable ways to get things that they think they are entitled to and do not get them. Men are taught that sex is something that divides a man from a boy, a winner from a loser, a strong individual from a weak individual, etc.
You combine all these things that men are taught, and continually reinforce them, what are you going to get?
Our media is saturated in violence, there's nothing natural about the media. We see violence normalized in many ways. For example, everything is a "war on" on one thing or another. War on drugs, war on terror, heck, if you say "Happy Holidays", you are waging a war on Christmas. It's really quite ridiculous.
We teach boys to be mercenaries, barbarians, and soldiers... then we wonder why they shoot at everyone else when they become men.

A baby boom is coming to the labor and delivery unit of a Maine hospital, where nine of its nurses will give birth to their babies around the same time, reports CNN.
The labor and delivery nurses at Maine Medical Center in Portland are all due between April and July.
"After each one of us started to say, 'We're pregnant,' I think it was a happier kind of announcement each time, and we're all there for each other," nurse Erin Grenier told CNN affiliate WMTW.

Eleven nurses are pregnant at the same time at Memorial Hospital in South Bend
SOUTH BEND Many of us may have seen a viral post about 9 nurses in Maine pregnant at the same time, but Memorial Hospital in South Bend is upping the ante. The facility has 11 nurses who are currently expecting.
After seeing the post about Maine, a local nurse said "Hold on, this title should go to us.

(1,752 posts)someone is single or unpartnered doesn't mean they're "celibate" or not having a satisfying (or reasonably so) sex life.
This has got to be the weirdest article Ive read in a long time. Do all these people literally go months, years without having an orgasm? Or do people (esp the young men mentioned in the article) get themselves off, but then are so hung up from religious indoctrination that they cant accept it as a positive experience? Either way, it would sure explain a lot about why the USA is so messed up!
