Tory Brexiter calls for confidence vote in May to sabotage her attempt to get further article 50 ext
Source: The Guardian
Mark Francois, the Tory MP and vice chair of the European Research Group, which represents up to 80 Conservatives pushing for a harder Brexit, has written to Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative 1922 Committee, asking him to organise a vote of confidence in the prime minister on Wednesday afternoon.
After May survived a Conservative party confidence vote in December last year, she cannot be removed under party rules by another confidence vote until December 2019, because this procedure cannot be used more than once every 12 months.
But Francois does not seem too bothered by that. He is calling for what he calls "an informal 'indicative vote' of confidence" in the PM. And he also makes it clear that his primary aim is not to trigger May's resignation, but to persuade EU leaders to refuse an article 50 extension. He says:
If, therefore, my colleagues were to demonstrate prior to Wednesday evening, in an indicative ballot say at 3pm, prior to the meeting of the 1922 Committee, that they have lost confidence in the prime minister I believe that under those circumstances it is extremely unlikely that the European council would grant an extension and we would, therefore, leave the European Union on Friday night, as so many Tory MPs so obviously want. Our future is therefore literally in the hands of 313 Tory MPs.]/i]

(49,001 posts)The vote is not to occur in May, but Wednesday April 10.
It's not a "vote in (Thersa) May" either.
Should be "calls for vote of confidence re May". That's why they are called "votes of confidence in ..." rather "confidence votes in ...".
The struggle to eliminate an "of" in the headline lead to a botch.

(7,897 posts)They don't want a constructive resolution, they want chaos: the dismantling of the British welfare state, anything that regulates Banking and "free" trade, and pursue the illusion that the influence the Empire once commanded can be revived.
They are silver-spoon, elitist, spoiled brats who believe those of lower class have no value and deserve none of the benefits a British citizen might rightly expect, like a government that works FOR them and protects their interests.

(9,988 posts)Brexiters do not want any immigrants coming to their country, and they are willing to destroy their own economy to get that result. Meanwhile Republicans are allowing Trump to commit all kinds of illegalities, like refusing to spend the $12.5 million appropriated by Congress for the Landscape Conservation Cooperatives research projects, selling nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia without approval by Congress, willfully violating judges orders to reunite children separated from their parents, and moving military spending that Congress controls from the military to his border wall, directing the Army Corps of Engineers to start constructing the wall even though he is being sued to stop his emergency declaration and Texas property owners have gone to court to fight the taking of their land, and who knows what else he has done that we dont even know about.
As with his entire life, Trump just breaks the law and bullies his way out of any consequences. And today NPR reported that Trump wants to reinstate child separation because his Nazi sidekick Miller has convinced him that it worked to deter migrants. I want out of this nightmare now!
