Drone footage shows Notre Dame Cathedral fire damage - video

Source: The Guardian

Aerial footage reveals the extent of the damage to Notre Dame Cathedral after a fire tore through the 850-year-old structure. Up to 500 firefighters had battled to contain the flames on Monday evening. The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has vowed to rebuild the Paris landmark within five years. The fire started at the base of the 93-metre spire and spread through the cathedral’s ribbed roof, made up of hundreds of oak beams, some dating back to the 13th century

that dropped from the ceiling. It would have been a Hell of a lot bigger mess to remove if the entire vaulted ceiling had dropped, like I had initially envisioned.

The surfaces that faced the fire now have a distinctive greenish tint. Limestone does this when it gets to around 600C. At 800C, it fails. If the damage penetrates very far into the stone it will need to be replaced.

I can’t imagine how this could be done in 5 years. Even 10 or 15 years seems pretty optimistic. The good news is that master stone masons from all over the world will want to work on this project, but it’s going to take a long time.

When the South transept of York Minster burned in 1984, the building didn’t reopen until 1997 and the damage there was not as extensive as what happened to Notre Dame.

and analysis will tell them. Present day Croatia still has some of the best limestone quarries in all of Europe. When the Canadians built Vimy, they brought it all in from there, the old Romans mines.

The lookout tower on Petrin hill in the Czech capital Prague and the Stari Most bridge in the Bosnia and Herzegovina city of Mostar were also brightened with the colours of the French flag.

An icon of Ottoman architecture, the bridge in Mostar was completely rebuilt in 2004 after it was destroyed by artillery fire in 1993.
