Suspected cause of Notre-Dame fire revealed

Paris: Investigators suspect an electrical short-circuit was the most likely cause of the Notre-Dame cathedral fire, according to a French judicial police official.

The official, who did not wish to be named, says investigators still do not have the green light to work in the cathedral or search in the rubble, for safety reasons.

He said the monument is still being consolidated with wooden planks to support some fragile parts of the walls.

The fire spread quickly through the cathedral's largely-timber attic, a lattice of ancient wooden beams known as "the forest", and up the wood structure inside the spire, partly fanned by a strong breeze. Notre-Dame also lacked some fundamental fire-prevention safeguards that are required in more modern structures, like firewalls or a sprinkler system, authorities have previously said.

The first fire alarm went off at 6.20pm, 25 minutes before the cathedral closed to visitors for the day. At 6.43pm, another alarm rang and, when staff returned to the attic, they found it well alight.
