Bolsonaro: Brazil must not become 'gay tourism paradise'

Source: BBC News

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been criticised for insisting the country shouldn't become a "gay tourism paradise".

"If you want to come here and have sex with a woman, go for your life," said Mr Bolsonaro, according to Crusoé magazine.

"Brazil can't be a country of the gay world, of gay tourism. We have families," he added.

Mr Bolsonaro has already drawn ire for being a self-described "homophobic".

Granted: Bolso's pal Macri isn't exactly gay-friendly.

In a 2007 interview, while running for mayor of Buenos Aires, Macri called homosexuality "deviant and undesirable; an illness."

"Would you celebrate if your son were gay? Please! We were made to be with a woman," he declared.

"Why would we (men) be with a man? Fine, it's easier: One could play tennis and then ... all with the same guy - but please!"

And it was his disregarding a court order to allow a gay couple to marry as mayor that prompted Argentina's Congress to legalize same-sex marriage in 2010.

But fast-forward to 2019, and his debt crisis has made Argentina insolvent and utterly dependent on tourist dollars - since only the IMF will lend his administration money these days (and at Trump's direction).

With a financial crisis that severe, I doubt he cares if those dollars are 'pink' or not anymore.

Perhaps he's never heard of the "French Quarter", except when it brought on the Katrina disaster.

Send them to New Orleans, we like gay tourists. We also like straight tourists, too. In fact, we like all people. That's why it's such a big tourist draw.

That, and alcohol.

gay tourists and their (twistedly perceived) impact, why not look to solve, I don't know, Brazil's murder rate (60,000+ murders per year or 29+ per 100,000)

What is the Greek ending for -hater? that would be more appropriate. Unfortunately I'm monolingual at best.

the number of tourist dollars spent in Brazil next Carnival can be reduced.

I am very particular where I spend my pink dollars.

the food, the weather and BOSSA NOVA! I had never heard it before and was entranced with it. Of course, it was made very popular soon after with such hits as "The Boy from Ipanema" but that was a year off when I first heard it in Brazil.

10. So if a woman wants to go there and have sex with a woman, can she "go for your life"?

Gay tourists probably have lots of money to spend to help local economies. Guess they can take their money elsewhere.

Conservative tourists are probably not that great for local economies.

Hell, even with these comments, Glenn probably still lurves him some Bolsonaro... Ignorant, bigoted low-rent fascist strongmen make him absolutely squishy inside...
