Mississippi flag ordered out of park near Statue of Liberty

Source: Associated Press

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Friday ordered that the Mississippi flag, which carries a Confederate emblem, be replaced by the American flag at a state park that overlooks the Statue of Liberty.

Murphy ordered the removal of Mississippi's flag from a display of each state's flag at Liberty State Park, a preserve of more than 1,200 acres in Jersey City that overlooks Ellis Island and Lady Liberty.

Murphy is a first-term Democrat and a self-styled progressive who regularly cited the Emma Lazarus poem at the statue's base that invites immigrants to America.

"The Confederate symbol displayed on the Mississippi state flag is reprehensible and does not reflect our values of inclusivity and equality," he said in a statement.

Those displays are supposed to be of the official state flags, as chosen by the representatives elected by the population of each state. If you start replacing them with arbitrary preferables, where does it stop? The display would essentially become meaningless. In this case the statement is clear; Mississippi is missing because its official flag is offensive. It is up to Mississippians to select something more appropriate if they want it to be part of our display.

maybe leaving it with no flag at all where mississippi should be, that might work.

but replacing it with the american flag seems more like erasing mississippi altogether than merely dealing with the problem of an offensive flag.

I spent 2 years in Shreveport, La. in 1971 and 1972 at the invitation of the U.S. Air Force. My landlord was an old school southerner...moss on the trees in his yard, and bars on the first floor windows to keep the "darkies" out.
He told me there was a sign on the Louisiana/Texas border that announced, "You are now leaving Louisiana and entering Texas." He said that the ones who could read stayed in Louisiana.
Personally, I think it might have been the other way around but then I was from New York and everyone down there hated northerners.

At the very least they should have been reconstructed in the full, Thaddeus Stevens sense of the word. But alas, they were not and slavery took on another name...Jim Crow.

Post-civil-war changes like this flag (1894) and early 20th century Confederate statues were created as emblems of hate. Not history.
