At least 41 people were killed after a Russian plane made an emergency landing and burst into flames at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow.
Videos on social media show passengers using emergency exit slides to escape the burning Aeroflot aircraft.
Two children and a flight attendant were among the dead, Russian media reports.
One witness said it was a "miracle" anyone escaped the jet, which was carrying 78 passengers and five crew.

I flew Aeroflot a few years ago and was never worried.
FWIW, the plane in yesterday's incident was a Russian model, as opposed to a Boeing or an Airbus. Also, Aeroflot is a Skyteam affiliate, meaning it has a relationship with Delta, KLM, Air France, etc. I don't think they'd be willing to do business with an inherently at risk airline.

Aeroflot's move away from Russian built planes may have improved their crash record somewhat, but I don't trust Putin's oligarchs to report incidents, nor would I give them my money. With all the airlines out there to choose from, Aeroflot should be your last choice.
Just because some western airlines have partnered with Aeroflot does not give it any more credibility than Deutsche Bank loans gave Trump credibility. Those airlines do not assume any liability for the Aeroflot leg of the trip.

It's almost as if the aircraft is taken over or the ILS system gives an impression the plane is higher than what it is. Remember the second Die Hard movie, where the plane was landing and flew into the ground because they changed the ILS radio signals?

Other reports indicate that the crew delayed acting on safety alarms.

(50,567 posts)The plane in question, a Sukhoi Superjet 100, is a pretty nice aircraft. It is made by an aircraft works more famous for jet fighters; this is their first passenger jet. They've made 127 of these. There have been four accidents, three with hull loss and possibly one (this one) attributable to a fault in the aircraft. (One plane was lost when the pilot flew it into the side of a mountain, one slid off an icy runway, one was crashed during a flight test because the pilot got stupid, and then there's this one.) This one departed Moscow with probably four hours fuel headed for Murmansk. It suffered unspecified technical problems (Russians love that term, so it could have been anything from the back of the airplane falling off to insufficient beer for the journey) and returned to Moscow with full fuel tanks.
When it landed, undoubtedly over max landing weight, that airplane hit the ground so fucking hard it bounced...so high you could see air between the belly of the SSJ and the roof of the plane behind it. When it finally came back down, the force of the impact breached the fuel tanks and...you know the rest of the story.
Without seeing the contents of whatever's left of the flight recorders, it's hard to imagine this coming out as anything but pilot error.

(94,792 posts)According to the Wall Street Journal, Russian Investigative Committee officials retrieved the black boxes and also took fuel samples from the plane, as well as studying audio recordings of the crews communication with the tower and video footage.
DNA and forensic medical examinations are also set to take place.
A statement from Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Co. said the jet was built in August 2017 and was under scheduled maintenance in the beginning of April this year.
