Boston Red Sox (not Boston Red Socks) ready for White House visit

Watch the ceremony here live at 3:45 p.m. Eastern.
The day of the Boston Red Sox visit with President Trump started off with a gaffe, with the White House websites schedule noting President Trump Welcomes the 2018 World Series Champions The Boston Red Socks to the White House.
By early morning, the White House had remedied the mistake.
The World Series winners will be minus several prominent faces during their trip to Washington. Manager Alex Cora, a native of Puerto Rico, decided not to attend because of Trumps stance toward aid for the island since it was devastated in 2017 by Hurricane Maria. At least nine players also plan to skip the trip, including Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Rafael Devers, Hector Velazquez, Xander Bogaerts, Sandy Leon, Christian Vazquez, Eduardo Nunez and David Price.

(53,784 posts)The manager is Puerto Rican and is declining to go because of trump's treatment of PR, and the players of color are not going either. This could be a potential riff with the POCs on the team and the white players who go.
IMO the white players should have enough sense to show solidarity with the manager and the rest of the team and not go as well. Everyone knows how badly trump treated PR after the hurrican, and it continues and the island still has not recovered.

(15,286 posts)and also decline the invitation. Boston has some of the most arrogant fans in the country, so if this episode is the beginning of the end of ESPN and FS1 fawning over the Red Sox , it's ok by me.

(53,784 posts)Their clubhouse spreads are better and more nutricious than cheap ass trump's fast food leavings.
The White House always, at least it used to, have, a great chef who would prepare a feast for visiting championship teams. No one even hears about the chef anymore. Wonder if he/she is still there since trump prefers fast food burgers and KFC.

(21,849 posts)I'd skip it not only for the reasons stated by the others (Rump's treatment of PR and lies about it, e.g.) but also because the food stinks. I'd waste an afternoon and still have to find a place to get a decent lunch.

(67,782 posts)....because I grew to dislike George Steinbrenner and others with the Yankees organization (that's a long essay in itself!)
Werner wasn't involved, and is probably oblivious to this negative fact, but the Boston Red Sox were the LAST major league baseball team to integrate. It wasn't until 11 years after Jackie Robinson was called up for the Dodgers that the Red Sox called up Pumpsie Green in 1959.

David Ortiz backs Alex Cora, Red Sox who are boycotting Trumps White House
May 8, 2019
He expressed solidarity with Manager Alex Cora and other players who said they will skip Thursdays visit with President Trump in Washington. And Ortiz did it in the plain-spoken manner he used to lift Bostonians before a Fenway Park game shortly after the Boston Marathon bombing. This is our f------ city, and nobody is going to dictate our freedom. Stay strong.
Ortiz was just as passionate when it comes to visiting Trump.
Im an immigrant. When it comes down to the political side of it, I dont know much about politics and things like that, but when it comes down [to] the way immigrants have been treated, its something that goes a long way, Ortiz, who was born in the Dominican Republic, told WEEI earlier this week. You dont want to go and shake hands with a guy who is treating immigrants like [expletive] because Im an immigrant....
Ortiz played for the Red Sox from 2003 until he retired in 2016 and visited George W. Bush in the White House after the teams 2004 and 2007 championships and Barack Obama after its 2013 championship. In fact, he pulled off a viral Samsung selfie stunt with Obama.
The decision for the 2019 Red Sox appears to be split along racial lines, with Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Rafael Devers, Sandy Leon, Eduardo Nunez, David Price, Christian Vazquez and Hector Velazquez declining to attend the ceremony. The other roughly 20 players, some of whom are on the injured list, have either said they will attend or are presumed to be doing so.

I should say that growing up I was originally a huge fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, as was my father. He was heartbroken when they moved to Los Angeles.
