Pennsylvania college to no longer allow frats, sororities
Updated 2:06 pm CDT, Friday, May 10, 2019
SWARTHMORE, Pa. (AP) Fraternities and sororities will no longer be allowed at Swarthmore College.
School President Valerie Smith made the announcement Friday.
It comes after the only two fraternities at the private liberal arts college in suburban Philadelphia decided to disband amid outrage over internal documents from one of the organizations. They contained derogatory comments about women and the LGBTQ community and jokes about sexual assault. Two campus publications released the Phi Psi documents from 2012 to 2016 and said were anonymously leaked.
In the wake of the documents' release, dozens of students occupied the on-campus Phi Psi house and called for both fraternities to be shut down.

(4,787 posts)..which is the actual fraternity. If a school no longer sanctions the fraternity's chapter, the national organization won't support it, or recognize the participants as its members. The houses are usually owned by the national organizations, so that's a problem.
Also, one big reason that people join frats is for the automatic post-college network that they provide. That goes away if the chapter loses its charter.

(178 posts)It turns out everyone has different skills and abilities. Some kids are talented writers. Some mathematicians. Some are talented cartoonists. Some are talented athletes. Universities were not meant to become corporate worker factories but an opportunity for young people to self actualize and to become contributing members of society. All of the above and many more should all have the opportunity to develop their skills in an environment at a higher level.
Another spin (personal agenda ahead My son has dyslexia. Despite being arguably the most intelligent and sophisticated scholar in his school, he isn't going to get an academic scholarship nor are his grades/SAT scores going to make him eligible at a glance. Turns out he is ridiculously good at soccer. He will gain access to a Division I college who will in turn use their considerable student-athlete resources to help a very talented individual obtain a college education that he would have otherwise had trouble accessing and if he did gain access he would have trouble accomplishing on his own.
Food for thought.

(4,436 posts)Im a different voice on this. I was a fraternity member in college, and the character of most fraternities would be
Against most of those rare issues that get local chapters into hot water. High standards of conduct, and dedication to purpose is a real benefit of fraternities and sororities. I disagree that they should be banned- if members of an individual chapter violate a norm, then deal with those people- not punish those who are doing good.

(62,444 posts)They were primarily venues for supplying underaged persons with alcohol.
Also, they kept extensive backfiles of homework assignments and tests for various courses, so that their members had access to study materials which other students did not.
I certainly imagine that they may have been different sorts of institutions at other colleges or universities, so I am not discounting your experience.

(9,893 posts)who would join a frat or sorority, and I found it a very positive experience. Partying, at least at the schools I was aware of, was certainly not limited to the frats, although this was the '70's. Maybe nowadays college students don't drink unless they are members of Greek organizations.
