FARIBAULT, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota man is accused of a bias crime for allegedly spraying a Somali American teenager and her siblings with a garden hose while he yelled racial slurs.

Eighteen-year-old Zachariah Manahan of Faribault, Minnesota, was charged Monday with felony stalking committed because of bias as well as misdemeanor charges of damaging property and disorderly conduct. Faribault is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Minneapolis.

The 15-year-old girl told police that Manahan had sprayed her and her siblings.

The girl also said Manahan sprayed water through an open second-floor window of her family's home. Police say a rug, a piece of furniture and the walls were drenched.

Manahan’s alleged attack saw him charged Monday with felony stalking – commit because of bias, as well as gross misdemeanor damage to property, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. A Facebook page which appears to belong to the alleged racist describes his occupation as a newspaper deliverer and ‘being AWESOME at spending my mom’s money.’

I live in Minneapolis. There are a lot of Somalis in my neighborhood but I've never heard anyone say a negative word about them. However, if you get out in the suburbs and small towns it's a whole different story. People seem to be more prejudiced against people they hardly ever see.

His life as a racist incel is going to be pretty bleak, I think. About 6 months in the county lock-up might do him some good, but he's likely to make like-minded friends there.

We have a thriving Somali community here in the Twin Cities. Those immigrants are working hard and trying to make their way in a strange country that has plenty of people who don't like them. The rest of us do what we can to support their struggle.
