House Democrats officially introduce contempt resolution for Barr, McGahn

Source: The Hill

BY MORGAN CHALFANT - 06/06/19 02:08 PM EDT

House Democrats have officially introduced a resolution to hold Attorney General William Barr and former White House counsel Don McGahn in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with congressional subpoenas.

The contempt resolution allows Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) to go to court to seek civil enforcement of the subpoena for Barr to turn over special counsel Robert Mueller’s unredacted report and underlying evidence, as well as that for McGahn to provide documents and public testimony.

The resolution also gives any committee chair the rare power to go to federal court to seek civil enforcement of subpoenas, both current and future orders, so long as they are granted approval by the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Board.

The Rules Committee is expected to mark up the resolution to hold Barr and McGahn in contempt on Monday, according to a Democratic congressional aide, and the full House is slated to vote on the resolution Tuesday.

refusing to comply with perfectly legal subpoenas is surely a major ethical lapse.

Disbarment is what happened to John Dean who also served time for obstructing justice. As these peckerwoods masquerading as lawyers should also.

At least Dean had the personal
integrity to say he’d had enough and blew the lid off their criminal enterprise. He continues to try to redeem himself but Barr is and always has been a conscienceless sociopath so there’s no redeeming value or prospect there.

You are on notice. We worked our tails off for TWO YEARS to flip CON seats wherever we could find them. That effort - of OURS - is why Rep. Pelosi can call herself Speaker, and why Nadler, Schiff, Neal, Cummings, Waters and more can chair all those committees and run things and set agendas.

It wasn’t ONLY for affordable health care or jobs. It was to hold this monster ACCOUNTABLE! Because the CONS were in charge and weren’t doing dick about it.

I fully support the contempt resolution for both Barr and McGahn. If we can't hold the president accountable, we can hold lawyers accountable.

Mark Sumner at Daily Kos wrote about this also.

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/6/6/1863125/-House-voting-on-contempt-for-both-Barr-and-McGahn-changing-rules-to-enforce-subpoenas

He also says that: "If the plan passes next week, the battle over subpoenas and contempt citations could kick into a much higher gear, allowing Judiciary Committee chair Jerry Nadler and Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff to go straight to court without stopping at the House floor."

I suspect McGahn is willing to comply and is just waiting for a court order to do so. If I were in their shoes, I'd comply as soon as the first court ordered me to comply. I wouldn't wait around for the appeal process.

But what authority will a federal judge have to enforce their ruling? They, Trump and Barr, have already said they aren't going to comply.
