24 immigrants have died in ICE custody during the Trump administration

Source: NBC News

The deaths of 3 detainees since April, along with the release of internal reports about detention center conditions, have spurred an outcry from advocates.

In April, a 54-year-old immigrant from Mexico died after several feverish days in a solitary cell. In May, a 21-year-old man from India hung himself in an Arizona jail. On June 1, a 25-year-old asylum seeker named Johana Medina Leon died in a Texas hospital after nearly six weeks in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The deaths of three ICE detainees since April, along with the release of several internal and watchdog reports documenting dismal conditions at ICE detention centers, have prompted an outcry from advocates who say the Trump administration is pushing growing numbers of immigrants into a detention system ill-equipped to care for them.

"What we're seeing is a reckless and unprecedented expansion of a system that is punitive, harmful and costly," said Katharina Obser, senior policy adviser at the Women's Refugee Commission, an advocacy group. "The U.S. government is not even doing the bare minimum to ensure [immigrants] are getting the medical care and the mental health care they need."

Twenty-four immigrants have died in ICE custody during the Trump administration, according to an NBC News analysis of federal data. At least four others, including Medina Leon, died shortly after being released from ICE custody. The number of in-custody deaths remains below the peak of 32 deaths in 2004, the first full calendar year records were kept.

is simply shameful. The fact that there is not more outrage over the conditions and the resulting deaths is untenable. I know that we are being presented with outrageous actions by this administration every day, but this travesty is not getting the attention it deserves. The conditions the children (and others) are forced to live in are pushing those that happened in Nazi Germany. There are Congress people who have/ are making trips to the detention centers where they are not allowed into the facilities to do oversight. WE ARE PAYING FOR THIS TRAVESTY - BUT WE HAVE NO RIGHT TO STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING. In addition to all the crimes and misdemeanors this administration is taking part in, this single crime against humanity needs to be brought to the International Criminal Court for prosecution.

While I agree in general that the situation at the boarder is reprehensible, not all these deaths can be blamed on the US. Some arrive in very poor health and die within 24 hours. They are given care, but it cannot be assumed that everyone arriving at the boarder is going to survive no matter what condition they arrive in.

Do members of Congress actually KNOW how many detainees have died in US custody? On May 29, 2019, Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro "accused the Trump administration of covering up the death of a 10-year-old migrant girl from El Salvador by failing to inform Congress and the American public". https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142319559?fbclid=IwAR16lcx8azygGxOB91Xeiu9w94_ie_8rogr2rAvT4b-wpEVUXZuP4RBD1qk
Congress needs to DEMAND a full accounting from the Administration on immigrant deaths while in custody, as well as those who "died shortly after being released from ICE custody".

It's an invasion of right-wingery. They are overwhelming the media roadways with propaganda to masquerade their awful actions.

And since the U.S. right-wing Republicans are dangerously cooperating with Russia, we can't expect them to defend America. Their interest is in money. Only.

Comparisons of ICE actions and policies to the Gestapo are apt and sadly predictive.

WHY?

Is there really a difference between the town gathering around the big tree and sheer complacency over caged humans and their deaths?

Our indifference to the others is sickening!

Only goes up to 2017, so can't see a comparison on causes of death then versus Trump's time in office.
