States prepare lawsuit to stop Sprint and T-Mobile merger
Source: Reuters
At least 10 state attorneys general plan to jointly file a lawsuit as soon as Tuesday to stop the $26 billion merger of Sprint and T-Mobile , a deal that would reduce the number of nationwide wireless carriers to three from four, according to three sources familiar with the matter.
New York state's attorney general is leading the lawsuit, one source said. New York's attorney general's office has announced a press conference for this afternoon.
The lawsuit is to be filed in New York, according to one source.
T-Mobile, whose parent company is Deutsche Telekom AG , and Sprint, which is controlled by Japans SoftBank Group Ltd, did not immediately comment. A spokeswoman for the New York attorney general declined to comment.

(26,294 posts)such a merger they still have Verizon and AT&T to deal with not to mention there are still a number of smaller providers.

(6,931 posts)When then let Verizon both of them claiming how GOOD it will be for consumers. What ya think a cell bill will be then? The same thing has already happened in the high speed internet arena. I'm paying $87 per month just for that service--no cable TV and soon to be $100,then $120. It started at $19.95 and has increased by over 400% in 15 years with COX. LESS competition is NEVER better. Doesn't matter if it's a cell phone or your trash cart.
HSI isn't a toy like it used to be,it's a lifeline sometimes and a way to get bills paid.

(25,183 posts)then I'll quit Sprint, I escaped the lousy network of T-Mobile, and they tried to screw me with extra fees at the end, even though I'd been a customer of theirs for years.
I mean it, I'm outta there. Maybe back to AT&T. I hope this merger does not go through, I'm fine with Sprint as it is, except for that obnoxious "Can you hear me now?" guy that they hired away from Verizon, another carrier that will never get a dime of my money ever again.

(25,183 posts)there are carriers that use the networks of the major carriers, but I've heard that calls from those carriers take a back seat to the majors when the call volume is high. I won't get on to Verizon ever again, they screwed me worse than T-Mobile, that leaves pretty much one major carrier left. I had AT&T many years ago, and quit them for Verizon because of coverage issues, and they have probably fixed that.
At some point in the near future, 5G will be a viable option, and I'd like to hook up to that. At home, I have cable Internet which is plenty fast, but on the road, I use my smartphone as a hotspot for my laptop, and would be delighted to have the speeds that 5G promises. But, I'm in no rush, and I hope that if this merger goes through, it will take awhile to implement, and if it doesn't, I'll stay where I am for the time being.
Do you have any specific recommendations on what I should consider?

(26,294 posts)we had poor to no signal in our house depending on what room we were in with with AT&T so we switched to Verizon but now we are back with AT&T and they seem to have improved the network coverage.
Granted we still come across the occasional dead areas but that even happens with Verizon though not as often.

(8,747 posts)Sprint service sucks, maybe T-Mobile will upgrade it.
Also, this will force Best Buy to carry T-Mobile which they currently do not do.
