Republican blocks bill requiring campaigns to alert FBI to foreign assistance
Source: Axios
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) blocked an effort by Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) to pass a bill via unanimous consent requiring campaigns to report any offers of foreign assistance to the FBI.
"We are all for free and fair and honest elections. ... These reporting requirements are overbroad. Presidential campaigns would have to worry about disclosure at a variety of levels. So many different levels."
Why it matters: President Trump's comments on Wednesday that he would consider accepting intelligence on a political opponent from a foreign entity set off immediate outrage from Democrats, who see it as an invitation for foreign adversaries to interfere in future U.S. elections. Lawmakers in both the Senate and the House have renewed calls to pass election security measures, with some going as far as to call Trump's comments "anti-American" and grounds for impeachment.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, responding to Blackburn's objection, said on the Senate floor: "How disgraceful it is that our Republican friends cower before this president when they know that the things he does severely damage democracy."

(67,112 posts)Now espionage is whole heartily accepted by some in the GOP, apparently, if it could secure the win of the GOP in an election. None of this IMO is going to end well.

(1,687 posts)WTF does she think her profession is? She is a goddamn politician. EVERYTHING is political. Her reaction and then her statement are political stunts.

(3,508 posts)I noticed that Blackburn picked up on Trump's ruse of of equating Russia and Norway (Trump, in his now famous ABC interview, If somebody called from a country, Norway,...." . Norway did NOT interfere with a US election, because they ARE NOT Russia! I suspect that Blackburn is applying for the VP slot on Trump's reelection ticket.

(17,946 posts)that I wouldn't piss on Marsha if she were on fire? She epitomizes all that is wrong with Tennessee...a once politically pragmatic state that's turned full on, nut job psycho.
