In this photo taken Sunday, June 23, 2019, a small crowd of local Republicans show their support of a Republican walkout outside the Oregon State Capitol in Salem, Ore. The gathering took place only a day after the Senate President ordered the statehouse to close over a "possible militia threat," the latest escalation in a Republican walkout over proposed climate policy that has put Democrats' top legislative priorities at risk.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said Monday she won't negotiate with Republicans who walked out to thwart landmark climate legislation, at least not until they return to the Capitol.
All eleven Republican senators didn't show up to work for a fifth day Monday, denying Democrats the number of lawmakers needed to vote on a potential statewide cap and trade plan.
Brown, a Democrat, deployed the Oregon State Police last week to seek out Republicans, but many fled the state and remain outside the police's jurisdiction.
Senate Minority Leader Herman Baertschiger said in a statement he has yet to reach a deal with Democrats and that Republicans "intend to remain out of state." Democrats have an 18 to 11 majority but need 20 members to conduct business under state law.

(21,650 posts)This was in '03 when Tom Delay's redistricting gambit was being pushed through the Texas House, and Democrats were trying to deny Perry a quorum.
That's the beauty of the GOPee: they can just as easily enforce the rules as break them. Just depends on what suits them better.

(7 posts)The WI democratic senators left the state in 2011 in an effort to slow down the awful things that Scott Walker and his goonies were cramming through the senate and legislature. In the end, it wasn't successful but it did make people more aware of the reprehensible things the administration was doing.
If it's OK to do for democrats, it has to be OK for the other side as well. In WI, the Democratic-Republican split was closer in the senate than in Oregon. They can't be gone forever - it'll make it easier for the dems to educate the public while they wait.

(6,279 posts)The fact that they are taking this particular stand over efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change is shameful. It's less what they are doing than why that bothers me.
