Luis Alvarez, a former New York City police detective who fought for the 9/11 Victim Compensation fund, died on Saturday, his attorney said. He was 53.

"It is with peace and comfort, that the Alvarez family announce that Luis (Lou) Alvarez, our warrior, has gone home to our Good Lord in heaven today. Please remember his words, 'Please take care of yourselves and each other,'" family attorney Matthew McCauley said in a statement.

"We told him at the end that he had won this battle by the many lives he had touched by sharing his three year battle. He was at peace with that, surrounded by family," the statement added. "Thank you for giving us this time we have had with him, it was a blessing!"

The former U.S. Marine spent weeks down at Ground Zero searching for victims and was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2016. He was one of more than 50,000 people whose illness had been linked to their exposure to toxins that were released after the towers collapsed.

McConnell and other GOP politicians should feel like shit but they are sadists and get off on this type of harm. They love it. They are more sick in their heads than the ones who are physically ill due to 9/11.

They wanted to use 9/11 to promote aggression, but not to bring hope the ones who had given their lives to save others.

Luis Alvarez

Rest in Peace.

"We will get around to it, that's how things work in congress. Steward needs to calm down". (That is how things work under republican control, pro life republican's, constitutional republican's, patriotic republican's, GOD's party. As per Falwell, Robertson, Graham. Trump's MurKKKa.

Detective Alvarez traveled to Washington earlier this month to appear before what Commissioner O'Neill referred to as an 'MIA' Congress. John Stewart and other 1st responders accompanied him.

Stewart’s testimony to the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties:

I want to thank Mr. Collins and Mr. Nadler for putting this together. But as I sit here today, I can’t help but think what an incredible metaphor this room is for the entire process that getting health care benefits for 9/11 first responders has come to. Behind me, a filled room of 9/11 first responders and in front of me, a nearly empty Congress.

Sick and dying, they brought themselves down here to speak to no one. Shameful. It’s an embarrassment to the country and it’s a stain on this institution. And you should be ashamed of yourselves for those that aren’t here. But you won’t be because accountability doesn’t appear to be something that occurs in this chamber.

We don’t want to be here. Lou doesn’t want to be here. None of these people want to be here. But they are, and they’re not here for themselves. They’re here to continue fighting for what’s right.
