China denies U.S. accusations of South China Sea missile tests

Source: Reuters

BEIJING, July 5 (Reuters) - China's Defence Ministry on Friday denied U.S. accusations that the Chinese military had recently carried out missile tests in the disputed South China Sea, saying instead that they had held routine drills that involved the firing of live ammunition.

The Pentagon said on Tuesday the missile launch was "disturbing" and contrary to Chinese pledges that it would not militarise the strategic waterway.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Friday that according to initial information, China appeared to have tested multiple anti-ship ballistic missiles last weekend. The official added that a detailed analysis was under way.

In a brief statement sent to Reuters responding to the U.S. claims, China's Defence Ministry said this was not true. "The relevant reports do not accord with the facts," it said.

Cold War was not war. The rest weren't won. Noriega was Bush I's pal who outlived his usefulness. hedda_foil Jul 2019 #5

I'd say the US analysis is probably correct. If they can threaten shipping they don't sanction with accurate anti ship ballistic missiles, they win unless Trump wants to go to war with China.

We haven't won a war since WWII, so I'm not at all confident that our supposedly best and certainly biggest armed forces could actually take on a huge rising power (i.e., China) and win.

So we lost in the Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Iraq 1, Iraq 2, and Afghanistan?
We surrendered and they won huh? lol

You have to look what the object was for US forces in those wars:

Cold War...keep Soviet Union from taking over the world....done...bonus Soviet Union falls apart
Korea: Keep S Korea from falling to the N.....success
Vietnam: Keep S Viet. from falling to the N, which did not happen while we were there but years after we pulled out...semi-success.
Grenada...lol
Panama....we wanted Manuel Noriega gone and that happened.
Iraq I...throw Iraq out of Kuwait....done
Iraq II, depose Saddam....done
Afghanistan....evict the Taliban from power, done

How do you think the opposing sides "won" in those wars exactly? If you go from the ruling class to a rebel group hiding in the hills you didn't "win" anything.

You can argue all you want about post-war out comes in those countries but our primary goal was met in all of them.
Even in Vietnam the south fell 2 years after we pulled out, not under our watch.

If your objective like in Iraq is to depose the dictator and install a democracy and you do that then you have met your objectives.
Somehow I doubt Noriega who I believe died in a prison in Fla thought he came out on top, same for Saddam and the Taliban, both taken out of power. A subsequent insurgency does not change that fact.

I had to create an account to post for the very first time (seven years following though) just to respond to this post. You couldn't be more right. I dispair at the people who say we lost in Iraq because a Sunni rebellion began a couple years after or those who claim the Mujahideen are the same as the Taliban. I've given up trying to educate people, but they are so invested in their outrage they reject basic math and logic.

So again, thank you for standing up for objective reality. I wish you good fortune in the wars to come.

We lost them because our leaders put limits on the military and their responses, lets face it the orders for our troops in Vietnam to respect neutral Laos' border were absurd.
