HANOVER, VA.
About a dozen people wearing white Klan robes and waving Confederate flags held a recruitment rally Saturday outside a Virginia courthouse.
The Hanover County Sheriff's Office tells newsoutlets that they received multiple calls about the Ku Klux Klan rally Saturday outside the county courthouse. But they said no laws were broken and no violence occurred.
The rally north of Richmond lasted about an hour.
The Klan unit waived signs and held banners urging prospective new members to contact them.

White supremacists in Klan robes hold surprise rally outside Hanover courthouse
By C. SUAREZ ROJAS Richmond Times-Dispatch 18 hrs ago
About a dozen people wearing white robes and waving Confederate flags gathered near the Hanover County Courthouse on Saturday and encouraged people to call a Ku Klux Klan hotline, according to witnesses and authorities.
A spokesman for the Hanover County Sheriffs Office said there were no altercations or disruptions to traffic during the brief rally early Saturday afternoon, but multiple people called police or took to social media to condemn what one witness described as a KKK recruitment drive.
Shannon Spiggle said she rushed to the courthouse to protest the white supremacists after a friend told her about it. Spiggle, who identifies as Jewish, said she felt the need to make her presence known.
I was not surprised at all, she said about the gathering. I was grief stricken. Its just so sad.

(1,414 posts)In 1871 The Congress through the Klu Klux Klan act declared the klan a terrorist organization. However, the Supreme court declared that act unconstitutional. Why?
For over 150 years the klan has operated on a basis of terror far more immoral than even the worst Al Qaeda can muster, yet donald j trump declared that indeed these are "good people". Why?
You know the answer why, and we oughta stop fooling ourselves.

(3,246 posts)For one, it didn't declare the Klan a terrorist organization, and no such language appears anywhere in it. It allowed for habeas corpus to be suspended in order to demolish the Klan, and it was effective in doing so. It essentially ended the Klan as an organization until its revival in the first couple of decades of the 20th century.
For another, SCOTUS didn't declare the act unconstitutional as a whole, it declared a very specific part of the law to be unconstitutional. Specifically, SCOTUS held that the feds can't penalize crimes like assault and murder. You'll notice that just plain old murder or plain old assault are not federal crimes. They only become federal crimes in very specific circumstances, such as a killing committed during a bank robbery.
As for why Dolt 45 declared that these are "good people," it's because he's a racist shitheel. That's not exactly an earth-shattering revelation.

(1,058 posts)I've posted on other threads a similar argument as to why extreme right wing speakers shouldn't be met with massive protests on college campuses.
Playbook:
1. Schedule controversial event
2. Ensure controversial event is well publicized.
3. Massive protests scheduled
4. School cancels event due to security concerns or event continues but with massive media attention because of the potential for security issues
5. Right wing media spends the next week showing how "The liberals only care about free speech that they agree with!".
6. Lawsuits follow, and campuses end up footing the bill.
7. Go to step 1.
Milo wouldn't get invited to speak at campuses if everyone ignored him. Their goal isn't to have right wing speakers on campus. Their whole goal is to have a reaction to having right wing speakers on campus.

(6,423 posts)It's part of freedom.
People have the right to be stupid as fuck, right up to the point they deprive another person of life, liberty, or property. All speech is, and should be protected with *ONLY the exceptions of defamation (libel and slander) and incitement to riot.
"I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it". Anyone who doesn't agree with that is more my enemy than any mere purveyor of even the most hateful speech.

Sorry to say, as long as there is anyone, anywhere who thinks any speech that isn't defamation or incitement to immediate riot should in any way be censored, I'm a might touchy

(15,805 posts)permit to the KKK or any other hate group. How embarrassing for any litigant, lawyer or judge to walk past the KKK recruitment outreach on their way into the halls of justice where the concept of our Constitution is enshrined.
