Edward Snowden memoir to reveal whistleblower's secrets
Source: The Guardian
After multiple books and films about his decision to leak the biggest cache of top-secret documents in history, whistleblower Edward Snowden is set to tell his side of the story in a memoir, Permanent Record.
Out on 17 September, the book will be published in more than 20 countries and will detail how and why the former CIA agent and NSA contractor decided to reveal the US governments plans for mass surveillance around the world and in the US which included monitoring phone calls, text messages and emails.
UK publisher Macmillan said the book would see him bringing the reader along as he helps to create this system of mass surveillance, and then experiences the crisis of conscience that led him to try to bring it down.
...snip...
Edward Snowden decided at the age of 29 to give up his entire future for the good of his country, said Macmillan chief executive John Sargent. He displayed enormous courage in doing so, and like him or not, his is an incredible American story. There is no doubt that the world is a better and more private place for his actions.

(28,136 posts)If he truly thinks what he did was righteous then he needed to state his case in court and not run to Putin's arms.

(3,065 posts)How could he do that? He was holding a security clearance. He couldn't say anything.
The whistle blower laws couldn't even protect him from Big Brother.

(26,320 posts)as well as a number of other Repugnants in the House and Senate to be willing to commit treason for more politicial power took a long time for the Russians to setup so its possible Snowden was acting as an agent for them for years as well.

You have no proof of that.
Snowden didn't move to Russia. Our country marooned him there.

(3,065 posts)Back when he released his papers, EVERYBODY on this board cheered him on for bringing to light the fact that OUR government was intercepting Americans phone calls and emails. A blatant crime.
Now you all call him a traitor.
I guess someone with a high post count started snarking him and you all piled on.
Edward Snowden is a patriot in exile. He pulled back the curtain on our intel agencies and showed you what they were doing with YOUR information and you want to roast him. And now you accuse HIM of collusion with Putin? Gimme a break.
His publisher's quote is spot on, in my opinion.

I am still using the many good sources he dug up. Snowden did good work, and I do understand why he chose a life as a refuge.

(25,646 posts)The Obama administration did not do illegal surveillance. The crimes of the Bush ad. had already been reported. Anyone who was paying attention knew this.

(89 posts)You're wrong that he's a patriot. He's at best a vainglorious fool, and at worst an actual traitor. His activities in Russia removed all doubt about Snowden.
There was a time when people here used to often post RT (Russia Today) in the video section. There are still some of those addled "old left" binary-minded folks around, supporting the current Venezuelan government, Snowden, Assange, etc. It's a faction of the far left, unfortunately. Oliver Stone is a perfect example: https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/oliver-stone-asks-vladimir-putin-032458145.html
They used to admire the USSR, and the collapse of the USSR destroyed their poor little binary brains.
