Ohio Governor Proposes New Gun Control Laws, Marking Shift From Past GOP Leadership

Source: NPR

Gov. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) is calling for a version of the "Red Flag Law," expanded background checks, and other gun control proposals in the wake of the mass shooting in Dayton over the weekend that left nine people dead. These proposals represent a dramatic shift in the way Ohio's state leadership has handled gun policies for most of the decade.

Mass Shooting In Dayton, Ohio Leaves 9 Dead, Dozens Injured
As DeWine rolled out his 17-point plan to reduce gun violence, he reflected on Sunday night's vigil for the Dayton shooting victims. During his address people started chanting "Do something," which eventually drowned out the rest of his remarks.

"I understand that anger, for it's impossible to make sense out of what is senseless," DeWine said during a press conference Tuesday morning. "Some chanted 'do something' and they were absolutely right."

DeWine says he's introducing a "safety protection order" which reflects what many other states call the "Red Flag Law." This allows a judge to confiscate firearms from someone who poses a threat to themselves or others. His plan would also require background checks for all gun purchases and transfers with some exemptions, strengthen penalties on crimes involving guns, and increase access to mental health treatment.

I can only buy 30 Sudafed pills per month at the pharmacy. Perhaps they should sell ammo at Walgreens behind the counter since they're already set up to track it for the government.

I was listening to a discussion of the 2nd Amendment today where it was pointed out that there was a ruling which stated that citizens are not guaranteed UNLIMITED gun rights. In other words the government has the ability to put limitations on types of weapons, quantities, and I would presume it could be argued limit the quantity of ammunition purchased.

If it costs $5 to fire one round, automatic and semi-automatic weapons with high rates of fire are much less of an attractive option. It might also curb police incidents where they fill suspects with lead if it costs a lot to discharge a weapon.

I wonder what exemptions he has in mind. Why should there be ANY exemptions?

Republicans have a super majority in both the house and senate in spite of the Buckeye State's nearly equal divide, and DeWine knows it
