Nearly 84,000 duplicate voter records found in audit of California's 'motor voter' system

Last edited Fri Aug 9, 2019, 09:05 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: LA Times

California’s ambitious effort to automate voter registration at Department of Motor Vehicle offices produced almost 84,000 duplicate records and more than twice that number with political party mistakes, according to an audit released Friday by state officials.

The analysis covered just the first five months of the new “motor voter” program, which was launched in April 2018. It found a wide array of problems with the rollout of the DMV system, including a limited amount of testing as well as inconsistent and confusing lines of communication between the state agencies involved in its creation. Many of the findings align with documents reported by the Los Angeles Times in an investigation earlier this year of the motor voter program.

Auditors reviewed more than 3 million voter registration files, comparing the records from both DMV and California’s secretary of state. They found 83,684 duplicate voter registration records, a mistake attributed to inconsistencies in what was listed for voters’ political party preferences.

“This action resulted in no impact to voter eligibility,” Keely Martin Bosler, director of the state Department of Finance, wrote in a letter on Friday to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Cabinet secretary.

Yep, any little inconsistency at all will bring out the wolves calling for voter id laws. It sounds like this is being properly taken care of.

Which is the only way they can win...

We will fix ours.

What will they do, other than double down and use what they have proved to work?

I tried to renew my license in January this year. Two months later I still had not received it and then finally received a letter saying they messed up (that it was in a batch of mistakes) and I should relieve it in a week.

Three weeks after that I received the same letter about my voter registration not being completed due to a mistake on their end.

Last time I had to renew my license, new picture and everything, I made the appointment online. Showed up at the designated time. They were running a bit late but I was in and out of there in about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes.

to get my Real ID and CDL renewed. It was packed as usual, but only a 20 minute wait, as I'd scheduled the appointment a month earlier. Even filled out the application online before the appointment, which made it faster. Definitely recommend an appointment, as I do remember the long waits!

How many people move and register to vote in a new town and not drive back to the old town and cancel their old registration?

I called them when I moved to a different county. They told me that they don't remove people, but that after I hadn't voted in that county for a while, my name would just fall off. I still sometimes get voter information from them, mailed to me 75 miles away in another county.

People have to update their drivers licenses but they never bother with their voting registration. Then they find out they aren't registered to vote, and quickly make a new one without changing or deleting the old one. It's not a massive effort to commit voter fraud, like the Repukes make it out to be.

The mistakes are made by voters from both parties and independents too.

Duplicate registrations happen when people move or don't realize they're already registered. I'm actually surprised it's only 84,000. CA is a big state with 40 million people.

you are not allowed to make any mistakes (very intimidating) as well.

I had to call the DMV to get clarification. It must've been designed by rethuglicans -- it's the worst form I've ever seen, and I've seen lotsa forms.

Yet, nearly all of the voter fraud cases in this country - documented - are from the Republican side.

At this point, I don't care anymore because the bad faith from the Republicans will continue unabated no matter what Democrats do. Bottom line, no pearl clutching here. Over it.

because my name on my voter registration doesn't match the name on my vehicle registration. On one my first name is listed s Kenneth and on the other, it is Ken. So I can be called for jury duty under either name. Same address on both.

The government has systems in place to assess its effectiveness in implementing its policies. They find mistakes, errors, etc. They take responsibility. They notify those affected. They make their mistakes, glitches public. They inform the public what corrective actions they' e taken. Finally, they let the public know what changes they've made to the system to reduce the risk of similar mistakes, errors, glitches in the future. The media (L.A. Times) provides the sunshine to ensure accountability. Thank you media.

My unsolicited advice to my fellow voters. Stop reacting with outrage. Use your critical thinking skills. It will make us more civil and our communities much much safer.
