Hurricane Dorian: 'generational devastation' in Bahamas, says PM

Source: The Guardian

The official death toll from Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas has hit 20 and is likely to rise further, the country’s prime minister has said, as he warned of “generational devastation” in the archipelago’s northern region.

Aerial video of the Abaco Islands – a northern band of islands hardest hit by Dorian – showed widespread devastation, with the harbour, shops, workplaces, a hospital, and airport landing strips damaged or blown to pieces, all of which was frustrating rescue efforts.

Dorian pummelled the area as a slow moving category 5 hurricane over the weekend.

“So many families have been deeply impacted” by Dorian, which “has left generational devastation across Abaco and Grand Bahama”, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said at a press conference late on Wednesday. “We ask you to pray for the families and loved ones of the deceased,” added the PM, who had just returned from a flyover of the Abacos.

Hopefully the government of the Bahamas will decline a visit from the orange asshole.

The US president has suggested he may visit the Bahamas in the wake of Dorian.

“I guess you would call it a British protectorate, but I will do a lot,” Trump told reporters earlier on Wednesday. “We’re waiting for a call – they’re having a lot of trouble with the telephones over there as you can imagine – from the prime minister and we’re helping a lot.”

This foundation is based in Pittsburgh and I know some of the volunteers personally. It's very highly-rated low overhead foundation that sends donated relief supplies and medical volunteers anywhere in the world where there is a disaster and people are dying. The doctors, nurses and medical volunteers are all professionals who donate their time and skills to help disaster victims. Food, water, clothing and supplies are collected (or purchased with donations) and flown to the disaster area as soon as they are able to get in. They've gone to Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Indonesia, and countless other places in the last 50 years.

More documentation on Brother's Brother can be read here. They're already planning their first trip to the Bahamas as soon as they are allowed in.

I've posted this info already on DU, and I'll be happy to provide more info to anyone who PMs me.

My wife and I were in the British Virgin Islands. We had a sailboat at a marina that was wrecked. We tied up some loose ends and while there made a purchase on another boat that had arrived from Aruba. We drove around the island and were amazed at the destruction of what a Cat 5 can do. The entire island was wrecked. One thing that stuck out in my mind was the road (blacktop) was lifted off the road bed and deposited over 100 meters away from it's original position almost intact.

Also, the resilience of the people was amazing. Everywhere you went the people were still happy to greet us with a Good Morning, Good Afternoon or what have you and a happy smile while you could hear power tools and hammers in the background. We helped do what we could while there and volunteered some time.

The difference is that Dorian stalled over the islands of the Bahamas and the Bahamas are relatively flat while there are good size mountains on the BVI. The images from the Bahamas are just horrible

Staying at a marina apt...young couple owned it. The man had a boat he used to trap crab..Took me out one day to check the traps and he pointed out a bunch of concrete monoliths..large pieces of highway, bridge abutments..He said they used to be roads that got moved around over the years from hurricanes...
