Four missing after ship capsizes, burns near Georgia coast

Source: USA Today

Rescue teams were searching for four crewmembers after a cargo ship caught fire and capsized Sunday off the Georgia coast, the Coast Guard said.

Twenty people were rescued from the Golden Ray, a 656-foot long ship that was "listing heavily" in St. Simons Sound near Brunswick, the Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard Sector Charleston was notified by the Glynn County 911 dispatch that the ship had capsized. The Coast Guard "immediately issued an urgent marine information broadcast" and sent ships and two helicopters to the scene.

The ship's command and chief engineer were assisting authorities and salvage teams in stabilizing the ship and pressing ahead with rescue efforts, the Coast Guard said. Local first responders and towing groups also were aiding the search.

'A car carrier leaving Brunswick, GA this morning headed for Baltimore wasn't properly ballasted and tipped over blocking the channel to the port. The port side is about 85 above the water.Looks like some folks in Maryland won't be getting their new car any time soon.'

This is unacceptable - maybe Dorian distracted the crew?

Several good videos of this event found here:

Rescue efforts continue on overturned cargo ship in St. Simons Sound, four crew members unaccounted for
The Golden Ray, which is a vehicle carrier vessel containing 24 crew members, overturned Sunday morning after leaving the Port of Brunswick.

(snip)
Rod Sullivan, a maritime law expert in Jacksonville, says the ship was under the control of a harbor pilot – the local mariners who bring big cargo vessels in and out of ports.

Because of that, he says “the odds that this was a navigational error is virtually zero. Probably what it was was a mechanical failure, like a steering failure.”

For instance, Sullivan says, if the rudder failed and turned hard, the ship could have run aground, causing it to list and the cargo to shift.

We hope they can rescue the remaining crew members. Appears to be a very dangerous mission.
