Trump says he fired national security advisor John Bolton -- but Bolton says he 'offered to resign'
Source: CNBC
President Donald Trump said Tuesday he fired national security advisor John Bolton, saying on Twitter he had "disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions."
But minutes later, Bolton in his own tweet said that he "offered to resign" Monday night, and that Trump told him, "Let's talk about it tomorrow."
Either way, Bolton's departure shocked Washington, D.C.
"I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning," Trump said in a tweet.

(2,309 posts)President Trump has fired national security adviser John Bolton, the lifelong proponent of American hard power, after months of division between the men over the direction of foreign and national security policy.
Trump announced the news on Tuesday in a post on Twitter.

Bolton was Trump's third national security adviser and continued the pattern of departures by advisers who proved a bad fit for a White House led by the rare president with no prior experience with the military, national security or elected office.

WASHINGTON President Trump fired John R. Bolton, his third national security adviser, on Tuesday amid fundamental disagreements over how to handle major foreign policy challenges like Iran, North Korea and Afghanistan. Mr. Trump announced the decision on Twitter. I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week.
His departure comes as Mr. Trump is pursuing diplomatic openings with two of the United States most intractable enemies, efforts that have troubled hard-liners in the administration, like Mr. Bolton, who view North Korea and Iran as profoundly untrustworthy.
The president has continued to court Kim Jong-un, the repressive leader of North Korea, despite Mr. Kims refusal to surrender his nuclear program and despite repeated short-range missile tests by the North that have rattled its neighbors. In recent days, Mr. Trump has expressed a willingness to meet with President Hassan Rouhani of Iran under the right circumstances, and even to extend short-term financing to Tehran, although the offer has so far been rebuffed.
To his admirers, Mr. Bolton was supposed to be a check on what they feared would be naïve diplomacy, a cleareyed realist who would keep a president without prior experience in foreign affairs from giving away the store to wily adversaries. But Mr. Trump has long complained privately that Mr. Bolton was too willing to get the United States into another war. The tension between the men was aggravated in recent months by the presidents decisions to call off a planned airstrike on Iran in retaliation for the downing of an American surveillance drone and to meet with Mr. Kim at the Demilitarized Zone and cross over into North Korea.

(70,186 posts)John Bolton: Trump sacks national security adviser
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49655279
16 minutes ago
US President Donald Trump has fired his National Security Adviser John Bolton.
"I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House," he wrote.
"I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions," Mr Trump wrote, adding that a new national security adviser would be appointed next week.
.................................................
Sources said that the National Security Council, which advises the president, had become a separate entity within the White House under Mr Bolton.
A former senior Trump administration official, who wished to remain anonymous, told the BBC: "He [Bolton] operates separately from the rest of the White House.
According to the official, Bolton did not attend meetings, and followed his own initiatives.
"He's running his own show," said the official.
A White House official told the BBC's US partner, CBS News. "Bolton has his priorities. He didn't ask the president 'What are your priorities.' They're Bolton's priorities."
Mr Bolton had opposed peace talks with the Taliban, which Mr Trump scrapped at the weekend after inviting the group to the US.
Mr Trump's policy drew criticism especially because of its timing, close to the anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attacks by al-Qaeda, a group that the Taliban had hosted in Afghanistan.
.................................................
According to Foreign Policy magazine, Mr Bolton had argued that inviting a US-designated terror group to Camp David - the presidential retreat outside Washington - would "set a terrible precedent".
His opposition led to a growing rift with the secretary of state, who appeared on five separate news programmes on Sunday to defend Mr Trump's outreach to the Taliban.

That would be a impossible reason for Trump to fire him because the Trump administration does not have any foreign policy.
And I think Trump wanted to keep a high profile war monger on board just in case it looked to him like he was going to lose the 2020 election a nice war would be a good way to win the election. Bolton has probably given more thought to what country we could attack without the US being devastated in response. Probably has a long list with war plans for each.
And I can hear Trump at rallies "You can't change horses in the middle of the stream". And that would be enough "patriot" votes to win the election.
