UAW will not extend GM contract, but no decision on strike

(Reuters) - The United Auto Workers said late on Saturday that it will not extend its contract with General Motors Co (GM.N) that was set to expire in hours, but would continue to work pending a meeting of senior union officials.

The union will continue to work “until a course of action is decided by the UAW International Executive Board and the UAW-GM National Council,” UAW Vice President Terry Dittes said in a statement.

GM said in a statement: “We are prepared to negotiate around the clock because there are thousands of GM families and their communities – and many thousands more at our dealerships and suppliers – counting on us for their livelihood.”

Well, with a right wing NLRB in control and Labor Secretary that hasn't done crap except attack workers and a libertarian right wing supreme court that don't like workers.....................and GM making millions on stock option buy backs and a tax cut to boot and shutting down plants and a scab loving president, making promises.........................that are nothing more than a words from a con artist....................

1. Lest we forget,

Ford Motor is the largest UAW Bargaining Unit. GM was the target this time because of their Plant Closings and off shoring to China.

GM is transforming into a Wholesale Jobber rather than a Manufacturer of Product. Car Guy's are calling them the China Motors of Detroit.

3. GM baked this into their cake after their Bailout.

One only needed to take a look at the suppliers of funds during the Bankruptcy . Goldman,Morgan,and a couple hedgies were not Manufacturing people,just leaches. Have yet to see a any Chapter 11 truly support their Union shop. Usually those folks are gone down the road within seven or eight years and in most cases less than that.

8. Very True, just like when I was working for United and the employee owned airline

which I was a part of (IAM-------- mechanic), went to Wall Street to get financing after 9/11 to keep the operation running, they flat out said change management (that's not how it has been reported), but the basic information we got was that we had to give up stuff or we will not do any business with you, or until you file for bankruptcy, eliminate the ownership stock from the certain employee groups and get someone at the top that they liked, the IAM would not go along with that, the congress at that time basically screwed the employees at the airline, when labor (IAM) and the employees that owned a company went and asked for help while under Bush and the congressional people basically said nope, your on your own....................and what is truly remarkable is that the Bush crowd had an inkling that something was going to happen......................and told no one.....................

9. Similiar garbage happened to all

UAW and IAM Union folks at Northwest Airlines. Wilson and Checkie were nothing but Corporate Raiders. When they brought in the guy from Continental,on my bi-weekly sales and service calls,all one heard was the end is near and if you got the time,get out or find another another Airline where your Rights would transfer without starting out at the bottom. Still remember the day Delta took Control,there was a major jump in Home walk away's and Banks suddenly were having to deal with Quit Claims in lieu of Foreclose.

Talk about getting screwed.

11. I remember that....................it is absolutely amazing how vulture capitalist

get there hands on assets and then start crying wolf, just like what Icahn and Lorenzo did, even made a special law called the Lorenzo Rule and the vultures found ways around it...................and workers try to figure out why they don't get ahead.....................its rigged against you/ them...........

4. I am still sad

for my Ohio friends who have uprooted and even had to leave their spouses to work at Missouri and Tennessee plants.

5. UAW member for over 40 years...

We never talk about giving up the strike until it gets close to what is needed and near the dead line. Very standard.

6. Airlines.......................we had to contend with the Railroad Labor Act

and then if we went on strike which we did, one time at USAir 1992....................it was not good.

Pilots crossed the picket line the flight attendants had a temporary injunction and wanted to join the strike, but a judge said nope if you do fines.......gate agents being pressed........all the they (pilots) had to do was say, we are not going to fly planes that are being deferred on maintenance and it is safety issue, but they had settled their contract in June and they were not going to honor the strike, .................... ..............they did not, and to this day I think of ALPA as a bunch of self serving (jerks to put it mildly, real mildly)..........................we took our strike vote, and there were people literally going across the table to the negotiators on the mechanics side willing to give in to the management team.

It is and was amazing to watch even after all of these years on how the courts basically handled this and how other unions sided with the court threats basically or face a fine, or they were just not going to honor the strike.....................and now after all of these years, the outsourcing is running rampant, and job classification is being bastardized......................... to keep costs down

7. I hired in in 1972 and retired in 2002

30 and out.
Remember standing in the cold around that burn barrel trying to keep warm and keeping trucks from going into or out of the plant. Worth every moment of. Retirement has been great.
