LOS ANGELES (AP) Sander Vanocur, who for decades covered the biggest moments in U.S. politics for NBC and ABC news, has died.
Chris Vanocur tells The Associated Press his father died Monday night in Santa Barbara, California. He was 91.
As national political correspondent at NBC in the 1960s, Vanocur covered conventions, elections and assassinations during some of the most momentous years in American history.
He was a questioner at the first debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1960 and went on to cover Kennedys administration from the White House.

(28,246 posts)When you get into your late 60's/early 70's, you get to a point where famous individuals from your past are passing away on a daily basis. It's a bummer, but it comes with the territory.
Vanocur was one of the great ones. RIP.

I'm still mourning the death of John Chancellor, and that was ages ago...

(19,192 posts)of my age group drop like flies. They seem to be going at an accelerated pace lately, and the more who precede me the more I think about my own mortality. I'm not scared of death, but there's so many things I want to do before I shuffle off my mortal coil. Sandor and Cokie were two giants of my generation, and they'll be greatly missed. Many of my favorite musicians are passing as well. Don't let anyone kid you, the 'golden years' suck ass.

(6,926 posts)At least he was 91, Cokie was only 75. Yes, I turn 70 in a few weeks, I am allowed to say "only 75".

He was sortof one of those old-school "backbone of the media" correspondents.

(1,278 posts)With 2 prominent journalistic deaths in the past few days, it's beyond time to light a candle for some of the few real journalists left that can impart wisdom and show how it's done. Dan Rather is probably the last link to that era. As an aside, I know that Tom Brokaw is still alive, and despite not agreeing with his stances, still has been there/done that.

(18,770 posts)He was the one who told Walter Cronkite that JFK was dead (Cronkite stressed that no official confirmation had been released, though, but dutifully reported Rather's report). He went to Vietnam, reported on Watergate, etc.
