Trump, Carson reject California's request for federal help on homelessness

Source: ABC News

At the same time that President Donald Trump and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson are promising federal action to intervene in homelessness in California, they're rejecting requests from local officials for help and escalating the blame game between the federal government and the state.

California Gov. Newsom and local leaders. including mayors of the state's 13 largest cities. wrote to Trump this week to ask for more federal funds to expand programs like housing vouchers that help people get off the street into stable living situations.

“We can all agree that homelessness is a national crisis decades in the making that demands action at every level of government – local, state, and federal. In California, state and local governments have ramped up action to lift families out of poverty by investing in behavioral health, affordable housing, and other homeless programs,” they wrote. “In contrast, your Administration has proposed significant cuts to public housing and programs like the Community Development Block Grant.”

"Your letter seeks federal dollars for California from hardworking American taxpayers but fails to admin that your State and local policies have played a major role in the current crisis," Sec. Carson wrote in a letter responding to the leaders. "If California's homeless population had held in line with overall population trends, America's homeless rate would have decreased. Instead, the opposite has happened, as California's unsheltered homelessness population has skyrocketed as a result of the State's over-regulated housing market, its inefficient allocation of resources, and its policies that have weakened law enforcement."

Gee. I thought it was the free market and good old capitalism that was universally assuring that there will be high rents, exorbitant property values and little to no groundbreaking on affordable housing now or in the near future along with a large number of new jobs being part-time, low wage, no benefit positions that don't even allow for sustenance living these days for massive numbers of people.

Oh, sorry. I guess I was way off there since that is not the official position. Oh, so, yeah, ah, drugs, poor choices, criminals, mental illness, prestige, whatever. Why do so many people choose to be homeless, huh?

I have get my dig in here: Carson is probably the most useless idiot I have ever seen in any governmental position and I think he should do some brain surgery on himself at this point. Now, if you are looking for some fine, expensive furniture...

But do we actually believe that Carson wrote that letter...there have been enough times when Carson couldn't put a coherent sentence together!

This smacks of the machinations of one Stephen "The Nazi" Miller, not Carson, the man who often sounds like he performed a lobotomy on himself...using a gas station bathroom mirror and a box cutter!

Since Trump blames the democrats for all the big city problems, I'm sure the republican mayor there has everything under control.

and you don't see many homeless in rural areas where trump's base lives.

They do the same with crime and other issues. They used to say it about drugs but stopped when opioids and meth became rampant in rural America.
