Emmy Viewership Falls Under 7 Million For First Time To All-Time Low

Source: Deadline

UPDATED, 11:11 AM: The early metrics were not good for the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards and the final numbers are another bludgeoning for TV’s biggest night and Fox, this year’s broadcaster.

Watched by 6.9 million viewers from 8 PM to just after 11 PM ET, the hostless ceremony pulled in the smallest audience for any Emmys ever. That’s smack is a 32% fall in sets of overall eyeballs from the Monday airing of the show on NBC last year, and a 39% drop from the show’s previous Sunday airing on CBS in 2017. In addition, the decline this year from the last time Fox had the Emmys in 2015 is a hard-to-swallow 42%.

In terms of the key demo of adults 18-49 …well, they’ve tuned out it seems, even with big wins by the much-watched Game of Thrones for its final season. Pulling in a 1.6 rating among the 18-49s, the metric was also an Emmy low.

I don't happen to own a TV, although I watch a reasonable amount of TV over the internet. I have Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. I'm not willing to pay similar sums for another however many subscriptions I'd need to watch more shows.

The other thing about no TV is that I'm generally years behind in watching shows. And there are some very popular ones I have zero interest in. But I do read lots of books. And spend far too much time on DU.

where they are doing 22 episodes a year, filming on a faster schedule - an episode a week with scripts written on tight deadline - to an actor appearing in a one shot big event TV movie/miniseries - where the script wasn't written on a weekly deadline and the shooting schedule - the number of script pages shot in a day - was slower.

Happy that Succession won an award. Great drama centering around family “resembling” the Murdock clan.

Fleabag was IMO the best comedy entertainment of the year, and it took lots of statues.

Emmy history was made as first gay black man scored top prize in his category.

Five men wrongly convicted of rape and exonerated years later were present to see their story take top recognition.

I now have a few “musts” on my watch list that I hadn’t heard of before.

I know that it’s not fashionable to be entertained by awards shows, but I guess I’m just easily amused. I like the blips and bloopers, the excited nerves of first time winners, even the corny jokes. And I like that it is pissing somebody off for not being the center of attention for a couple of hours.

So I get cable, internet and phone through my cable. (Blue Ridge Cable, our ONLY option other than satellite, which won't work due to lack of line of sight.)

The internet is NOT the highest speed, which I thought it was, only to find out THAT was why shows I missed (included in my package) and tried to go back and watch on demand, constantly "buffered" and were unwatchable... I refused to up the speed, so if I missed it, I missed it. Too fucking bad for me.

My one vice is my teevee. 75 inch Sony Bravia 4K.

Therefore I HAVE to receive high definition, which means you have to accept EVERYTHING beneath it, because it is tiered, and you start with basic. I don't have extra sports (I like Olympic sports, but that is about it), I don't have extra Spanish channels (me no habla), and if allowed I would drop EVERY Fox channel. Out of the 100s of channels, we watch about 20.

I WAS happy to see Mrs. Maisel (HBO) won, and Rupaul (high def on VH1) won. I was unfamiliar with ALL the others.

I DO have a LOT of blu-ray movies, but once I have watched a movie, it may be a few years until I watch it again. Sort of like re-reading a book I just read...

My total bill is $235 per month.

Yes, I see ads for all those cool shows on subscription services, but I'm maxed our for what I am willing to pay.

If I had all the add-ons, my bill would probably be $500 a month. (just an over the top guess, I have no idea how much they cost, individually.)

Not happenin'.

I am NOT going to disconnect completely. So I will just have to be content with bitching and complaining.

But I didn't watch it because it was on FOX. My precious teevee will NOT be defiled by Fox. Hell, I gave up The Simpsons years ago because they were a fox show. I was devastated...

re: Fox, if it helps, Fox News is no longer part of 21st Century Fox, which is owned by Disney now.

When Disney bought Fox, Fox News and the Fox Sports networks were not part of the deal. They were spun out of 21st Century Fox and comprise a new company called Fox Inc.

No broadcast, no satellite, no cable.

We have an inexpensive unlimited DSL internet connection. It works fine for standard definition Netflix. No buffering.

Our adult children likewise watch internet-only television. They live in big cities with fast fiber internet connections so they can watch HD television and higher. Other than Netflix I don't know which services they subscribe too.

The Simpsons are now owned by Disney if that's any consolation. It will be streamed on Disney+

Moira and her wigs. And the crows!

And I read somewhere regarding the latest season, which was a sentiment I also shared, that I have never been so excited to see a community theater production.

I need to check out Fleabag and Mrs. Maisel. I hope Ozark has another season.

Been watching Ken Burns Country Music on PBS. I'll watch anything he produces. One of his productions is better than anything else on TV. And I'm not a country music person. Exception is Lyle Lovett.
