Man arrested in Greece not connected with Navy diver's murder during TWA Flight 847 hijacking

Source: Task and Purpose

A Lebanese man arrested by Greek authorities over the weekend has turned out not to be involved with the 1985 murder of Navy diver Robert Stethem during the hijacking of TWA Flight 847, the sailor's brother told Task & Purpose.

Greek media initially reported over the weekend that Hezbollah terrorist Mohammed Ali Hammadi had been taken into custody. A German court had sentenced Hammadi to life in prison for Stethem's death, but he was paroled in 2005 and returned to Lebanon.

But Kenneth Stethem, a former Navy SEAL, said a Justice Department official informed him on Sunday that the man currently held by Greek authorities is, in fact, not Hammadi.

When he first saw reports that Hammadi had been captured, Stethem felt "a kaleidoscope of feelings swirling in side," but experience had also taught him to be wary of good news, he told Task & Purpose on Tuesday.
