Climate activist Greta Thunberg, 16, and three others have been named winners of the 2019 Right Livelihood Award, which is known as the "alternative Nobel Prize."

The Right Livelihood Foundation said in a statement Wednesday that Thunberg won the award "for inspiring and amplifying political demands for urgent climate action reflecting scientific facts." The award comes with a cash award of 1 million Swedish crowns ($103,000).

"I'm deeply grateful for being one of the recipients of this great honor," Thunberg said in a statement. "But of course, whenever I receive an award, it is not me who is the winner. I am part of a global movement of school children, youth and adults of all ages who have decided to act in defense of our living planet. I share this award with them."

Thunberg is also among the 301 candidates nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The winner will be announced in the first week of October. According to the Nobel Prize organization, any national member of government can nominate an individual for the heralded peace award. If Thunberg wins the Nobel Peace Prize, she would be the youngest recipient since Malala Yousafzai, who was 17 years old when she received the prize.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Greta Thunberg, Swedish teenage climate activist was named on Wednesday as one of 4 winners of the 2019 Right Livelihood Award, known as Sweden's alternative Nobel Prize. Thunberg, 16, called out world leaders at the UN on Monday for failing to tackle climate change in a speech at the start of a climate summit in New York.

She started solitary weekly protests outside Swedish parliament a year ago. Inspired by her, millions of young people poured onto streets around the world last Friday to demand governments attending the summit take emergency action.

Thunberg shares the award with Brazilian indigenous leader Davi Kopenawa of the Yanomami people, Chinese women's rights lawyer Guo Jianmei and Western Sahara human rights defender Aminatou Haidar. "With the 2019 Right Livelihood Award, we honour four practical visionaries whose leadership has empowered millions of people to defend their inalienable rights and to strive for a liveable future for all on planet Earth," the foundation said in the statement. The four laureates will received a cash award of 1 million Swedish crowns ($103,000) each.

Greta Thunberg Wins Right Livelihood Award For Climate Change Activism

It’s a great award and people should know about it and know its name.
If they don’t know it’s name, then putting it in the headline where it belongs will encourage readers to address their ignorance and learn it.

One of my friends got this price in 2001:

Right Livelihood Award to "The Trident Ploughshares, United Kingdom".

If the state does not follow the law it is the duty of its people to take action and to prevent a crime. Angie Zelter, Ellen Moxley and Ulla Røder belong to a group of activists enacting the biblical prophecy to "beat swords into ploughshares".

Their aim is to disarm Britain's strategic nuclear force, the Trident submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile system, in a peaceful, open and fully accountable manner. The women argued that a person may use reasonable force to prevent a crime -and the jury found them Not Guilty.
