Congress Gives Final Approval to Spending Measure That Would Stave Off Shutdown
Source: New York Times
Congress on Thursday gave final approval to a short-term spending bill that would punt the threat of a government shutdown to just before Thanksgiving, giving lawmakers an additional two months to resolve their differences over paying for President Trumps policies.
The measure ensures that all federal agencies and departments, as well as a number of health care and community programs, will maintain their funding through Nov. 21, just before Congress is scheduled to depart Washington for its Thanksgiving break. The Senate voted 82 to 15 to pass the bill, clearing it for the White House, where Mr. Trump is expected to sign it.
Thats the easy part, Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, said in a floor speech on Thursday. The hard part is getting a bipartisan appropriations process back on track.
That task promises to be a difficult one, given bitter differences between Democrats and Republicans over several elements of Mr. Trumps agenda, none more acute than the dispute over financing construction of a wall on the southwestern border and his immigration policies.

(23,005 posts)He loves chaos and plunder above anything so will he resort to form and fuck this up or will he sign it because he has bigger fish to fry? I think he vetoes it.

(127,330 posts)so he's SOL sustaining a veto (although he could sit on it and run out the clock and let it go into effect after 10 days) but then Congress could "stop the clock" (the 1st is 5 days away and they often give some leeway over weekends).
It had earlier passed the House 301-123 (290 needed to override) - https://www.rollcall.com/news/congress/stopgap-spending-bill-continuing-resolution-government-shutdown
