French Study Finds Tumors and Organ Damage in Rats Fed Monsanto Corn

Source: Truth Out

Rats fed a lifetime diet of Monsanto's genetically engineered corn or exposed to the company's popular Roundup herbicide developed tumors and suffered severe organ damage, according to a French study released on Wednesday.

The study could have a big impact on the battle over a California ballot proposal that would require groceries containing genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled as such. Monsanto has already donated $7.1 million to the campaign to defeat the proposal, known as Proposition 37.

The study links varying levels of both the Roundup herbicide and the transgenes in Monsanto's patented NK603 corn to mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage.

Rats that ate the genetically modified corn or were exposed to Roundup at levels authorized for agriculture in the United States were two to three times more likely to develop tumors. The researchers found that 50 percent of male rats and 70 percent of female rats died prematurely, compared to only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group.

Elementary logic:

If this stuff were safe, would Monsanto spend $7 million to make sure GM corn was NOT permitted to be labeled as such?

If you answer that one with "yes," I hope your medical insurance is paid up.

"Safe” Levels of Round-Up Weedkiller and GM Corn Found to Cause Tumours and Multiple Organ Damage

Sustainable Food Trust
19.09.2012

New peer-reviewed research published today shows the results of the first animal feeding trial into the life-time exposure of Roundup tolerant GM corn and Roundup, the world’s best selling weed killer. The study, published online by the scientific journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology, shows that levels currently considered safe can cause mammary tumours, kidney and liver damage, in laboratory rats.

The study was led by molecular biologist and endocrinologist, Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen in France and was supported by the independent research organization, CRIIGEN. The researchers used 200 rats that were fed a diet containing the Roundup tolerant GM maize, NK603, or given water containing Roundup, at levels permitted in drinking water and GM crops in the US. It showed that these rats developed tumours faster and died earlier than rats fed on a standard diet.

The results are an important consideration in the debate around genetically modified food as this is the first time scientific research has shown a link between GM food crops and negative health outcomes. The research is also the first to show the impact of consuming the herbicide, Roundup, over a two-year period – the entire lifespan of a rat. Previous studies into GM and Roundup have stopped at 90 days whereas this research showed that the most serious health impacts only started to show at four months, with the majority of tumours developing from 18 months onwards.

French Study Finds Tumors and Organ Damage in Rats Fed Monsanto Corn

<...>

In the past, Séralini, an independent scientist celebrated by biotech critics, has publicly wrangled with peer scientists, pro-industry groups and regulators over interpretations of data from 90-day studies on rats conducted by biotech companies that were used to justify regulatory approvals of Monsanto crops in several countries.

Séralini and his team believe the study released this week is more conclusive because it spans two years and followed the rats' entire lifecycle.
"It's bizarre and dramatic for us that the US government," said Séralini, "has not requested to make serious tests before releasing these products into the environment because these GMOs are pesticide sponges, and we know that pesticides can be harmful to humans."
Séralini also pointed out that his team started to see tumors after four months, while the industry studies on rats were limited to a three-month period.

In 2010, a lead embryologist in Argentina named Dr. Andrés Carrasco survived an attacked by an angry mob determined to keep him from speaking at a public event about his own research on Roundup, which found that the herbicide caused deformations in chicken embryos that resembled birth defects in humans being reported in the country's agricultural areas where the herbicide is heavily used.

What was the "angry mob" angry about?

How did there come to be an angry mob rioting for Monsanto?

In Brussels, on Wednesday thousands of protesters hit the streets calling for an overhaul of European food policy. The rally came as a new French study claimed rats fed GM corn produced by US firm Monsanto had suffered tumours and multiple organ damage. Opponents of genetically modified food were quick to demand an urgent review of the EU’s current policy.

‘‘Those in the food industry who said there wasn’t a risk lied, they didn’t tell people the truth. Europe’s independent food agencies now have to act. It is absolutely essential that we kickstart the debate and re-examine GM food. The new evidence shows how dangerous GM crops are for human health,’‘ said Green MEP Jose Bove.

Fresh row over GM foods as French study claims rats fed the controversial crops suffered tumours

Rats fed a lifelong diet of one of the bestselling strains of genetically modified corn suffered tumours and multiple organ damage, according to a controversial French study published today.

The report is set to reignite the debate over whether GM crops are safe.

>

Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen and colleagues said rats fed on a diet containing NK603 - a seed variety from crop giant Monsanto made tolerant to dousings of the bestselling weedkiller Roundup - or given water containing Roundup at levels permitted in the United States died earlier than those on a standard diet.

The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumours, as well as severe liver and kidney damage.

13. French PM maintains ban on GM crops

France will uphold a ban on genetically modified crops as President Francois Hollande pushes his plan to put the environment back at the top of the international agenda.

The ban targets corn produced by the multinational conglomerate Monsanto, the maker of the only genetically modified organism currently allowed for cultivation in Europe.

Monsanto markets MON 810 maize, under the trade name Yield Guard, as being resistant to insects and other pests that threaten harvests.

Every country in the EU reserves the right to legislate on whether or not to ban genetically modified (GM) crops.

The thing is, science today is most often applauded for its ''miracles'' and ''breakthroughs'' in their so-called understanding of Nature.'' Problem is, Nature already understands itself -- it knows what it's doing, it is we who don't understand even when our scientists claim that they do.

Who in science can tell us what the health and longevity effects have had upon the world's population from the over 90,000 chemical compounds they've created and launch into the environment since 1945? No one can. But I think I know. I'm nobody's fool. Likewise, one rarely sees someone pointing the finger of blame at science for unleashing all these new miracles they've discovered upon us, and which likely is the cause of the increases in diseases and deaths that we now suffer under. Even those of the ''unintended consequences'' variety. So I'm doing so -- now.

Because if science is to get credit for putting a man on the moon and saving kids from polio, then they must accept the blame when they kill, maim and impart debilitating conditions and diseases that result from their insights into how Nature works. Particularly since pharmaceutical medicines are now largely responsible for he surge in deaths which today kill more people than traffic accidents do. These so-called cures have been quietly marketed to our children to increase profits. And even when there is open recognition of the problem by our leaders nothing seems to change. It only gets worse. So exposing this and all of what these men and women of science do, is only fair.

It's the TRUTH.

- But I'm tired today and casting aspersions against Monsanto and their ilk can become a full-time occupation. So I'll let Chris speak for me -- he says it better anyway:

''Science and technology serve the ambitions of humankind. And few in the sciences look beyond the narrow tasks handed to them by corporations or government. They employ their dark arts, often blind to the consequences, to cement into place systems of security and surveillance, as well as systems of environmental destruction, that will result in collective enslavement and mass extermination. As we veer toward environmental collapse we will have to pit ourselves against many of these experts, scientists and technicians whose loyalty is to institutions that profit from exploitation and death.'' ~Chris Hedges, The Science Of Genocide
