Turkey Syria offensive: Dozens killed as assault continues

Source: BBC

Casualties are increasing as Turkey presses on with its cross-border offensive on Kurdish-held areas of northern Syria.

At least 11 civilians have died and dozens of fighters from the Kurdish-led SDF and pro-Turkish factions have been killed, reports say.

The first death of a Turkish soldier was confirmed by Turkey's military. Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes, amid growing international criticism of the offensive.

Turkey moved into northern Syria on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump pulled American troops out of the area. Analysts say the US withdrawal in effect gave Turkey the green light to begin its cross-border assault.

I thought Putin was closely allied with Assad in Syria. It can be a bit complicated over there but I've always viewed the Kurds as the good guys in that region.

The Kurds have been a good ally and if eliminating ISIS and terrorism was our goal, they were a great asset, as well. We just provided intelligence and air cover, etc., and they did most of the fighting dying.

So, yes it is complicated and there is much more to it that we may find out as things continue. Putin has interests in this, to put it simply, and it may go along with what we have seen concerning Trump's allegiance and Russian influences.

Obviously, Turkey has a different perspective and they consider the Kurds to be the terrorists. It is a game being played with people as the pieces on the board.

Alliances can shift, as we see.
