Some states honoring indigenous people instead of Columbus

Source: AP

A handful of states are celebrating their first Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday as part of a trend to move away from a day honoring Christopher Columbus.

From Minnesota to Vermont, at least five states and Washington, D.C., have done away with Columbus Day celebrations in deference to Native Americans, though the federal Columbus Day remains in place.

Since 1992, Native American advocates have pressed states to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day over concerns that Columbus helped launched centuries of genocide against indigenous populations in the Americas.

more reasonable to me to make another day Indigenous Peoples’ Day. That way it wouldn’t be like picking a fight with the Italian community. Oh wait, my bad. Picking a fight is what we do Every chance we get at this godforsaken moment in time.

By all means, if a state or the entire country wants to honor indigenous people, go for it. That doesn't mean it has to be at the expense of an exisiting holiday, one that is symbolic to the Italian-American community.

By all means, let's celebrate the theft of a continent, and mass slaughter of its inhabitants.

Indigenous Peoples' Day is the least we can do.
