Elon Musk to go to trial in December over 'pedo guy' tweet

Source: The Guardian

Elon Musk will go to trial in December, after a judge denied his request to throw out a defamation lawsuit by a British man Musk called a “pedo guy”.

Los Angeles district judge Stephen Wilson said a jury would now decide whether Musk’s statements about Vernon Unsworth, a British diver who helped rescue a team of young football players from an underwater cave in Thailand in 2018, amount to defamation.

Musk, the billionaire chief executive of Tesla, is being sued over a series of comments he made about Unsworth following the dramatic rescue. Musk called Unsworth a “pedo guy” and subsequently a “child rapist” after Unsworth mocked Musk’s plan to rescue the players using a mini-submarine.

Unsworth called Musk’s proposal a “stunt” and told him to “stick his submarine where it hurts”.

He was angry they did not accept his mini-sub as the rescue method. Instead, they went with live, professional, cave divers and for good reason.

It seems like something trump would do to lash out and say something like this. If this case finds Musk guilty, maybe the same precedent could be used for Trump and his 100's of defaming attacks on people.

but the difference is this is the only instance we know about concerning Musk. So it could be excused as a one time over the top response. I'm sure he was all set and ready to have the perfect platform to garner good will and at the same time promote his sub, and his company. Like Trump, he's not used to not getting what he wants. He made a mistake, let his emotions get the best of him. He's apologized and hopefully will be able to quickly pay off the guy and move on. The difference is how many times has he done something similar before, or after. With Trump these kinds of vile baseless insults are a daily occurrence.

be to speak before thinking until they lose a lot of money in court. Of course a lot of people without
money have the same speaking problem, too.

He could very well lose this battle unless there's something we don't know.

Another rich white guy who thinks the planets revolve around HIM!

Who ever came up with the idea of putting rich people ("businessmen" ) in power should STFU.

It really is a loser, and he will make a fool of himself if he testifies, which I can't see him avoiding.

Musk screwed up. He let his temper get the better of him, then listened to some crazy’s gossip about the guy and made an incendiary claim.

This should have been settled quietly a year ago, as it is in no one’s interest to go to court. Musk is letting his ego get in the way of his mission.
