Groups sue over rollback of lightbulb regulations

Source: CNN

(CNN)A coalition including environmental groups has asked a federal court to consider invalidating the Trump administration's rollback of regulations on light bulb efficiency. The administration's changes would overturn Obama-era requirements for more energy-efficient versions of several common light bulbs, including three-way incandescent, candle-shaped chandelier and recessed reflector bulbs. When the Trump administration overturned the Obama rules in September, they had not yet taken effect.

The groups filed a lawsuit Monday asking a federal appeals court to find that the administration violated a provision of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act that prevents the government from weakening efficiency standards. hen it unveiled the rule change, the Trump administration argued it was not weakening the standards because they had not yet taken effect.

It also said the Obama-era rules would cause light bulb prices to increase "by almost 300%." Environmental groups said the math worked the other way: that less-efficient bulbs would cost consumers more to operate. A few days after the rollback was announced, President Donald Trump criticized energy-efficient bulbs as "no good." "The bulb that we're being forced to use, number one, to me, most importantly, I always look orange," he told Republican members of Congress at a gathering in Baltimore.

The groups suing the government include the Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, Consumer Federation of America, Massachusetts Union of Public Housing Tenants, Environment America and U.S. Public Interest Research. More than a dozen attorneys general, led by New York state's Letitia James and California's Xavier Becerra, filed a parallel lawsuit on Monday.

Why should they all readjust to Trump? The old factories are either mothballed, converted to something else, or gone.

"the Obama rules" and anything "Obama" must be reversed or removed.

This is despite the fact that the original legislation was signed by Shrub.

Bush Signs Broad Energy Bill

By JOHN M. BRODER DEC. 19, 2007

WASHINGTON — Legislation that will slowly but fundamentally change the cars Americans drive, the fuel they burn, the way they light their homes and the price they pay for food was signed by President Bush Wednesday after having been adopted by the House on Tuesday by a large margin.

“Today, we make a major step with the Energy Independence and Security Act,” the president said after signing the bill at the Department of Energy. “We make a major step toward reducing our dependence on oil, confronting global climate change, expanding production of renewable fuels and giving future generations a nation that is stronger, cleaner and more secure.

The bill, which passed on a bipartisan vote of 314 to 100, sets higher fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks by law for the first time in 32 years and requires the production of 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels by 2022, a nearly fivefold increase from current ethanol production levels. The measure also establishes new efficiency requirements for household appliances and government buildings and sets a goal of phasing out the incandescent light bulb within 10 years.

ts passage marks one of the largest single steps on energy that the nation has taken since the Arab oil embargoes of the 1970’s. But its full costs will not be known for years. Critics contend it will make cars and trucks less safe and more expensive, divert farmland to costly production of feedstock for ethanol and other synthetic fuels, and raise the price of food because of competition for corn and grain between fuel refiners and livestock growers.

In fact, the market's shifted considerably towards more efficient bulbs already, and the companies *are* selling them.

The industry has already made the switch. They're not going back.
And consumers have already accepted LED lights. They're not going back.

It's like his promise to bring back coal. It's not happening.
The world has moved on.
We need to move on also.
We need a more efficient president that requires less maintenance and shines more brightly.
Our old, inefficient, dim bulb president must be replaced in November of 2020.

Now that they're the norm, they are not tremendously expensive. Even though they cost a bit more, the fact that they last for years and save electricity instead of being replaced in less than a year and burning hot like incandescents do means you break even or save money.

Replaced existing bulbs in 2006 with two rather decorative bulbs.

They are on for about 12 hrs. a day and 13+ years later they are still going.

They were expensive in 2006 ($70/pair) but well worth the investment and a money saver as well. Best thing is you don't have to change them for new bulbs every month.

Didn't George start this whole lightbulb thing? Companies have retooled, and they just need to keep making the new bulbs. How many Trumps does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

So both of those Administrations had rules to implement the bill.

But agree that he ignores the GOP role (that bill passed with huge bipartisan support) and only focuses on the guy who, despite being pummeled with all the birther nonsense, cut him right to the core, and did so publicly, during the WH Correspondent's Dinner... and he has never forgotten it. It just eats away at him, day after day after day.

The bulbs he’s trying to bring back are MUCH more orange than any of the high efficiency replacements.

LEDs are any color you want.
Halogens are more blue.
Compact fluorescents are much more green!

He has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about. Incandescent bulbs are the most orange bulbs in history.
