Trump: Park rangers will patrol Mexican border, arrest migrants
Source: USA Today
The Trump administration has ordered rangers from national parks around the country to travel to the U.S.-Mexico border to fight illegal immigration and drug traffickers.
It's an effort that comes as the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives has refused to fund President Donald Trump's border security plan, which calls for more barriers and beefed-up law enforcement along the border.
The directive has seen park rangers from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in Alaska, the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and Zion National Park in Utah, among others, temporarily relocate to Arizona and Texas to work with Border Patrol agents. And park officials say they've already been told they should continue sending park rangers to the border through September 2020.
Trump signed a stopgap spending bill Nov. 21 after Senate approval, to fund the government through Dec. 20 and stave off a government shutdown that would otherwise have started at midnight Nov. 21.

I'm sure the Dems have no problem with hiring more border patrol agents. It's that Trump is more likely to repurpose the money for his vanity wall.

(15,805 posts)are being diverted from their primary jobs? Those folks provide services for public health and safety, they protect the unique features in the parks that attract thousands of visitors, and they guard the fragile environment so future generations can enjoy the incredible vistas of our parks.
Not that Trump cares about any of that, but I can't help but think he has an ulterior motive in removing the Rangers that bodes no good for our park system.

(8,844 posts)Maybe Trump is thinking with the rangers out of the parks, he can get Erik Prince a new job of hiring his mercenaries to the Parks as "Rangers". This would make the transition of the National Parks to Privately held corporations a smooth transition...Think of it, Yellowstone becoming a giant thermal energy producing entity for the Oil and Gas industry........
A new Yellowstone Trump Lodge, a new Rocky Mountain National Park Lodge & Casino, or a new Yosemite "EL CAPITAN" hotel and amusement park ??????? Just think of the possibilities......
I'm sure Putin and the Saudis would gladly provide whatever financing is needed......

Trump's policy as usual is so so so so stupid, but beware because he's using agents of the federal government for people control instead of their assigned jobs.

(12,712 posts)I want to remind this ignorant asshole and his sycophants that we can see these wedge issues being created and focused on, not as ways to make our people safer, etc., but as both a diversion and a continuation of Fascist form of scapegoating, just as the fence/wall is not really an important priority right now, but I could list several that really are.
Trump, you are not only not focusing on or doing anything to mitigate or help any REAL or PRESSING issues, most of what you do or the people you appoint to agencies are obviously attempts to degrade or decimate what is helpful, useful or necessary. Not only are you not effective in accomplishing anything to solve real problems or take us all forward, you seem to be doing your best to be the anti-progress clown resident of all time, yes, in all of history! You have been tearing the place down. What, is that so you can make us so weak and vulnerable you can rule us for life?
It will eventually be well documented someday what a deep and critically destructive impact you have had on this country for most people other than the upper classes and that is a blow to our battle with the Oligarchs here in regards to their real and present threat to our democracy, which we intend to preserve.

(29,322 posts)Last time there was a rush to hire more border agents all it did was lead to incompetence & corruption.
Focus: Last border hiring binge had some bad outcomes
At first, Ortiz had a problem joining up. He was terminated in 2007 when a background check turned up a restraining order taken out by his ex-wife. Undeterred, he reapplied in 2008 and was hired.
It was a good time to join. CBP along with its sister agency, U.S. Border Patrol, was in the midst of an unprecedented hiring spree that would lead to both agencies doubling in size between 2003 and 2009.
That rapid increase in staffing came with some problems. Hiring standards were lowered, training at the Border Patrol Academy truncated, and background checks a crucial step were delayed or not performed at all.
Just months after being hired, a girlfriend accused Ortiz of stalking. And shortly after that, he became the target of a sting operation orchestrated by a federal task force focusing on border corruption. Ortiz was investigated for teaming up with a former colleague at the immigration jail to allow loads of drugs to be smuggled in to the U.S. through the inspection lane he staffed at the Calexico port of entry.

I say stick with the border agents they have & focus on hiring only the best. Immigration enforcement is not a big issue the Republicans make it out to be.
