Hillary Clinton Given Role At Queen's University In Belfast
Source: PBS NewsHour
LONDON Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a new role: chancellor at Queens University in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. The university said Thursday that Clinton was appointed to a five-year term in the largely ceremonial post.
It is a great privilege to become the chancellor of Queens University, a place I have great fondness for and have grown a strong relationship with over the years, Clinton said. The university is making waves internationally for its research and impact, and I am proud to be an ambassador and help grow its reputation for excellence.
Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, actively participated in the peace process that largely ended decades of violence in Northern Ireland. It culminated with the 1998 Good Friday accord. Stephen Prenter, chairman of the universitys governing Senate, said Clinton has made a considerable contribution to Northern Ireland and will be an incredible advocate for Queens and an inspirational role model for the Queens community.
The university said its chancellor has three primary roles: presiding when degrees are handed out, advising senior management and serving as an ambassador to open doors for the institution. - End.

(1,896 posts)An honourary honour is an earned honour, and I don't begrudge her recognition for having been a friend to the island of Ireland. On that measure, good for her!
But that friendship means she's also an unofficial and moral guarantor of the Good Friday Agreement, which is going to be part of the Brexit mess imploding. I'm prone to just want a low profile from everybody as an old blood feud threatens some last gasps of violence before Ireland reunites.

(1,896 posts)But peace in Northern Ireland is kind of like conquering Afghanistan or bringing peace to the Middle East: It's chewed up and spit out really all of the best in the business for a long time. That sort of ancestral hatred bred over centuries is astonishingly immune to rational thought, and I say this as a citizen of both Ireland and the UK.
She (and Bill, who deserves his own pile of credit) is a big part of why I'm as optimistic as I am that the GFA ultimately put Northern Ireland on the right track--and I'm still planning a trip to Belfast next year to see HMS Caroline, so I'm not expecting a return to The Troubles--but Brexit is really going to strain something which should have been left to sort itself out in its own time, and the medium-term is going to get very ugly. I genuinely believe a private individual, however talented, is likely to achieve little more than getting a bloody nose in a mess this bad.

Bloody noses are going to be many when Boris gets his way, however short his victory will be...
