Selective Service System website crashes amid questions and fears of another US military draft

Source: cnn

Updated 7:08 PM ET, Fri January 3, 2020

(CNN)The Selective Service website crashed Friday because of "the spread of misinformation," the agency tweeted.

The website's crash came hours after the announcement that the head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force, Qasem Soleimani, was killed by a US airstrike ordered by President Donald Trump. The hashtag #WorldWarIII was one of the top trends on Twitter Friday.

The incident led to threats of retaliation from Iran's government and the escalation of tensions between the US and Iran. It sparked fears on social media of a war between the two countries and the possibility of another military draft in the US.

"Due to the spread of misinformation, our website is experiencing high traffic volumes at this time," the Selective Service tweeted. "If you are attempting to register or verify registration, please check back later today as we are working to resolve this issue. We appreciate your patience."...................................

I don't want my grandson's to fight this war. My granddaughters are too young. But one will be 18 in 5 years. Send Trump's eligible kids.

Re-instating a draft won't be easy or simple. At least I don't think so. Although modern computer technology could make it very fast and easy.

Since every person now gets a SS number early in life, and since the Social Security Administration therefore knows everyone's date of birth, and possibly gender (I'll assume for simplicity a simple binary male or female, even though I know there are those who don't quite fir into the simple binary delegation) it would be incredibly easy, come to think of it, to send out draft notices to all eligible people of the right age.

More to the point, even with some kind of re-instated draft, it would take time, as in at least several months, to draft those needed and then to train them.

not everyone is on Twitter. So, some significant percentage of people will never see those draft notices.

And again, you don't just get drafted and go off to war the next day.

Plus, I expect there will be massive demonstrations against any draft.

Oh, and we've managed to be at war with several countries for the past two decades without a draft. Not sure this crap in Iran will truly result in a need for a draft.

We still have that thing called mail, like the notice I got in Vietnam. Not reading mail does not excuse you. When the losses in a real war, with powerful military supplied with Russian weapons, gets significant enough, somebody has to hold all those weapons The Industrial Military Industry is getting rich off of. When young people stop joining because of made up wars everywhere, somebody has to go. On the bright side, if we ever needed something to put a fire under the young asses to vote, it worked for my generation. After my friends, family and fellow solders die in your face.
Too many, "my kids will not have to go" folks out there. Not my problem, somebody else will be Patriots and die for me.

It’s the only way to ensure that a very broad section of society has a stake in making sure we become a nation at peace.

It is way too easy to start wars when the politicians own kids, or the chicken hawks kids, have absolutely zero risk.

There are always some that like to beat the draft drum every time something happens, there’s simply no need for millions of enlisted infantry on the ground.

They would lower standards for volunteers first since the military currently turns away about 75% of volunteer applicants.

Worst case just smoke weed before MEPS, military will always be zero tolerance about that.

You are talking about people who enlist, I am talking about people who are drafted, there is a big difference. My cousin had a trick knee that went out on him 3 times during basics and he ended up shooting the 155's in Nam. He also scored #1 on the mental test and put in for electronics but he ended up with a slide rule at the perimeter watching where our shells were hitting.

Modern policies can change when bodies are needed, I know, it happened for Nam.

The structure and manpower needs of the military have changed dramatically since the last time there was a draft, wars are not fought the same.

Regardless, they will simply relax standards for volunteers if they need to ramp up numbers for some reason, right now around 75% of applicants are rejected for medical, criminal, weight, past drug use, tattoo and body mutilation policy, credit history, etc. They can be picky right now but there is a huge pool of volunteers available that are currently disqualified for reasons that can easily be waived if needed.

If we were to reimplement the draft I believe it would bring enough families into the streets to protest.
Millions would protest chanting NOT WITH MY SONS AND DAUGHTERS Not for another useless war that does not threaten our shores.

Historically since the end of the draft post-Vietnam, our military has been made up by volunteers. Most of them are family members of veterans. Families who grew up with close military connections are more likely to make a choice to enlist.

I believe the government does not want to reimplement the draft because they know it would bring millions of moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, and uncles into the streets to protest against drafting their loved ones into fighting unnecessary wars. Wars in some foreign country that is no direct threat to invading our shores.

Remember when folks started to protest the war in Iraq and Afghanistan the government's first retort was this is an all-volunteer army. These young men and women have made a choice to enlist and defend our country.

As long as they have that counter not many folks will head to the streets to protest.

A draft would change that.

Non-drafted USAF Veteran 1965-1969. The third generation to serve.
