Texas appeals court grants order to delay taking Tinslee Lewis off life support

Source: CBS-AP

A Texas appeals court on Friday agreed to delay a judge's ruling that would have allowed a hospital to end life-sustaining treatment for an 11-month-old girl who doctors say is in pain and will not get better.

The Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth ordered Cook Children's Medical Center to not remove Tinslee Lewis from life support until it makes a final ruling in the case. The appeals court did not immediately schedule any hearings in the case.

On Thursday, a judge in Tarrant County denied a request by Tinslee's mother, Trinity Lewis, to issue an injunction that would have stopped the hospital from removing her daughter from life support.

Doctors at the Fort Worth hospital had planned to remove Tinslee from life support on November 10 after invoking Texas' "10-day rule," which can be employed when a family disagrees with doctors who say life-sustaining treatment should be stopped. The law stipulates that if the hospital's ethics committee agrees with doctors, treatment can be withdrawn after 10 days if a new provider can't be found to take the patient.

They get some kind of sick pleasure out of watching people suffer. I can understand the actual mother not being able to think straight in such a situation but for groups to play on her emotions and bolster her not wanting to lose the child is just plain sick.

She’s had 11 months to wrap her head around the fact her was born with terminal conditions. I do agree there are some sick folks supporting her bad decision.

Off of life support. It is a horrible decision to make.

But sometimes you have to put on your big pants and make the tough decisions.

If these forced pregnancy advocates surrounding her really believed in a God, they would let the child go to be with her maker....her God...in heaven. But the truth is those religious people don't really believe in life after death.

An 11 month old who had a heart attack, and likely to have another (Can you imagine the pain a child like that must be suffering? A heart attack at less than a year old.) and lung congestion can survive?

It's as if they believe if science doesn't work try magic. And don't offer to pay for any of the crap you are promoting. It's a con.

The poor child. I don't think I could sleep at night knowing the pain that child must be in.

When my spouse was in a coma and on life support and every rib in her chest had been broken in an effort to restart her heart, I would lie awake worrying about the pain she must be in. But it was only for 2 days, so that her children could get there and say good bye.

This child has been suffering for over a year.

I remember a case similar to this many years ago. The child was being kept alive "against doctor's advice" and they quit paying for treatment after about $350K.

I can see him getting involved at the request of the "Texas Right to Life" people. It would make for great photo-ops and headlines the evangelicals would eat up.

I loathe these sorts of people. The prey on low-information, ignorant people like the mother, Trinity Lewis. They give people like her false hope their child will get better in order to further their political and legal agenda.

They don't believe what they preach. If they did, they'd be happy for the child to go be with her god. The child is an innocent who gets into their heaven and gets to be with their god and their Jesus. Why, if you believe that, are you holding her back? Why aren't you accepting that your god has called her "home?" That's the sort of blather I hear from ministers every time I attend a funeral. I hear that "so-and-so" is in a much better place now. That god has called them home to be with HIM (yep, always, always HIM).

These people, the TX governor and the TX AG just make me angry at their mendacity. The governor and the AG don't give a shit about a brown baby. They're sure as shit not going to volunteer to pay for any of this. They just want the political points for it.
