WASHINGTON (Reuters) - German automaker Daimler AG (DAIGn.DE) said on Saturday it will recall 744,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the United States from the 2001 through 2011 model years because the sunroof glass panel could detach and pose a hazard.
The large recall covers more two dozen vehicles from C-Class, CLK-Class, CLS-Class and E-Class model lines. The automaker said the bonding between the glass panel and the sliding room frame might not meet specifications and could lead to sunroofs detaching.
Owners who paid for repairs for the issue will be able to seek reimbursements from Daimler. A Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman said on Saturday he did not have a worldwide vehicle total for the recall.
Dealers will inspect the glass panel bonding and replace the sliding roof if necessary, the company said.

(5,429 posts)It's the Sun!
It's the temperature changes!
It's the air pressure in the cabin when you wind some windows down!
Who would have thought?
Careful out there, a huge slab of glass lifting off at speed isn't too good for any vehicles driving behind.
But Daimler - what happened to 'Excellence in German Engineering'? Extended field tests? Mmmmm?

(2,572 posts)My 2004 C-320 had its sunroof pop off the rails a couple of years ago in a Tucson Monsoon.
(Of course it had to be raining.)
I had my mechanic put it permanently back in position so it couldn't be opened, and disabled its motor. The Arizona climate is not kind to synthetics that will last almost forever in Germany's temperate clime.

(43,259 posts)$100 each is $74,000,000 and I would think $100 a conservative estimate for parts and labor

(51,471 posts)badly. No one could fix it including Toyota (closest Lexus dealer 150 miles away). Last guy to take a look said entire headliner had black mold under it.
Traded it in and know it was sent to auction. It was a shame since the rest of car was perfect and luxurious. Only had 145,000 miles.
