Senator Inhofe blocks unanimous consent on resolution calling targeting cultural sites a war crime
Source: The Hill
Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman James Inhofe (R-Okla.) blocked passage of a resolution on Tuesday that classified attacks on cultural sites as "war crimes."
Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) tried to get unanimous consent to pass the resolution, arguing that the Senate should go on record amid President Trump's threats to target Iranian cultural sites.
"The president would compound the mistake which he has made and turn it into something that could be catastrophic for that region, for our country, for the world," Markey said from the Senate floor.
He added that Trump's threat to target cultural sites is a "betrayal of American values. It is wrong. It is a needless escalation which ignores international law."

(1,733 posts)...but I thought a single Senator can put a hold on anything any bill, any nomination, any vote. I guess youre right that theres nothing to stop them from calling for a vote. I guess we can only hope that a majority of Senators have more brain cells to rub together than Inhofe.

How in the hell would you block such a thing?!?!

(6,831 posts)I truly believe that there should be an age limit on Congress just as there is in the private sector. Past a certain age, there are inevitable, medically-documentable diminishments of intellectual and mental faculties.
115th Congress is the oldest in history. 25% of the Senators up for re-election in 2020 are over 65. The majority of older Congressional members are TWICE as old as the average voter in their districts/states.
I am tired of these OLD people, who have NO idea what the average family looks like, what they earn, how they live or any other indicator of their quality of life is any more. Many of these people cannot relate to current, modern life and have not grown or matured in their thinking (especially their reasoning and critical thinking skills) since they left high school. The way in which some of these older MEN relate to WOMEN is antiquated and more suitable to the 18th century.
Racism, sexism, misogyny.
Don't get me wrong. I'm on the north side of life myself, but I'm NOT in a position to be making life decisions for the country's citizens, and I wouldn't do so, even if asked to run for office (And yes, I was asked. Many times. Emphasis on was, as in when I was a younger person.)
The time for age-limits has come.

(47,496 posts)and I have a feeling a younger Inhofe was just as big a jerk as he is now. Then there are some people remain vital and active until the day they die. Jimmy Carter is a prime example.
I suppose the reason I brought up his age is because I can't understand what on earth he is trying to accomplish. A younger person might be trying to acquire power, influence, or money, but Inhofe has already attained those. At his age, you'd think he would care about how he is going to be remembered.

(6,831 posts)but that is the exception (Dianne Feinstein) and not the rule (Chuck Grassley).
My grandad lived to be 99. My gran to be 89 - still doing crossword puzzles in ink, faster than anyone. Don't get me wrong. I have had the honour of knowing many really quick-witted, intelligent, brilliant nonogenarians. But they have been few and far between.
But why do these exceptions think they are STILL in tip-top form and NEED to be in government ? Arrogance. Hubris. Delusion.

(47,496 posts)That is pretty sharp!
I know that my mind does not work like it used to and my short term memory sometimes sucks, so I'm often concerned about older people with too much power. That said however, I'm still supporting Joe Biden for president. As I said, I try to view each person on an individual basis.
I think many of the sharp elders have kept very active and involved, which helps to keep them on their toes. Look at Nancy Pelosi, she blows me away. If she'd retired, she may have gone into decline.
You are right about some of them hanging on when their time has come and gone. It does appear to be arrogance with a dash or two of delusion.
Have you read The Blue Zones? It is a fascinating study of people around the world who lived into their 90s or even 100s.
