Winter storm to encase 1,700-mile stretch of U.S. in ice, snow

A storm will serve as a reality check for millions of Americans this weekend, following a stretch of springlike warmth expected to challenge records. Wintry precipitation is forecast to overspread a 1,700-mile corridor of the United States, spanning from the Central to Northeastern regions.
The same storm system that will bring the threat for severe thunderstorms and flooding rain across the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys will also pose a threat for accumulating snow and ice beginning this weekend.
After the weather system tracks through the Northwest at midweek, it will intensify and tap into the available energy from an unusually warm and humid air mass surging out of the Gulf of Mexico.
A heavy rain threat will first expand across the mid-Mississippi Valley on Friday, then the threat for accumulating snow and ice will soon thereafter threaten portions of the Plains and Midwest while colder air seeps southeastward.

(4,033 posts)If you look at where Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky come together at a point, where the Ohio River shifts from a Northerly course to a Southerly course is right where I live. Almost every single wide scale weather map/forecast refuses to tell me which zone will be in. Look at the above map and tell me am I going to get rain or showers?
Sigh. Just like everything else going on, we don't know which possibility we are going to end up with. War, Nuclear War, Diplomacy, As Trump says, if you hit him he will hit back even harder. <sigh>

(67,782 posts)I spent part of one early winter in Wilmington, Ohio (back in the 1970s) It was hit or miss if we'd have rain or freezing rain. More often than not it was ice.
Finally, I decided to head back to NY in December. A day or two after I made the decision, we were hit with maybe the worst ice storm I've experienced. Everything was encased in ice, the parking lot where I lived had 2-3 inches of solid ice, I couldn't even move my car. It wasn't that it was slippery, my wheels were 2 inches deep in solid ice.
Had to just sit inside and wait it out. While waiting I packed everything in the car and got ready. Finally we had a thaw and the ice melted. I hopped in the car and never looked back.

(8,918 posts)Weather will move West to East.
It appears like you are only on the edge at the start.
As the weather moves east, you will get plenty of rain.
Besides, it's always better to plan for the worse, but expect the best.

(4,033 posts)Typically the worst of storms get pushed up the western North bend of the river and gives us less of a storm than folks just on the other side of the river. But not always. So we just never know.

(14,492 posts)will be 72 degrees on Saturday all the way up through Richmond, VA.
On the other hand, International Falls, MN will do well to hit 3-degrees and a low of -14 Friday night. Brrrr.
And, Albuquerque, NM will get a good dusting of snow and a low of 19-deg. Friday night.
That's our new jet stream, folks.

(1,732 posts)I'm driving up to Tacoma from San Diego on Saturday and will be up there for two weeks. I can't wait to experience the PNW snow, as every other time I've been to the Seattle area, it's been 80+ degrees and beautiful out!
Any suggestions on breweries in the area?

(6,496 posts)50 degrees is pretty warm day in January for Maine. This doesn't look like it will be anything much for us up in Maine.
