HUD seeks to roll back Obama rule on housing desegregation

Source: AP

By JULIET LINDERMAN and HOPE YEN

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration took steps Tuesday to roll back an Obama-era rule intended to ensure that communities confront and address racial segregation in housing, saying local governments have been overburdened by the requirements.

The proposed Department of Housing and Urban Development rule would redefine fair housing standards to place more emphasis on improving housing choice rather than reducing discrimination. It would reduce regulatory burdens and eliminate the assessment tool used to map racial segregation under the 2015 Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule.

According to HUD, simplifying the process for cities to meet fair housing requirements would help them meet their civil rights obligations. But housing advocates caution the plan would substantially weaken fair housing enforcement, leading to a resurgence of racial segregation across the country.

“This proposal would dismantle efforts to combat ongoing racial segregation in the housing market and effectively allow jurisdictions free rein to discriminate without consequences,” said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Some people's minds are just broken, like when you are young and one of your toys breaks. It doesn't work right anymore, and isn't really good anymore. It takes up space in the toy box or in your room until it gets thrown away. Don't waste time hating the broken toy - the anger will hurt you too. As a hispanic male who married and had 2 girls with a primarily Irish female, I have also experienced the receiving end of the betrayals of someone of my ethnicity to myself and others. It is mind bending. My wife has difficulty understanding specifically all the feelings, but it also angers her.

Here is how I cope day to day beyond voting, etc. The people to whom he causes pain feel an 'otherness' or lesser. They are made to feel like they don't belong because they are treated differently in job interviews, classrooms, and every other time they deal with establishment. I go out of my way to treat minority type and white person who looks like they may struggle with smiles, hold doors open, help carry stuff, volunteer and teach my kids tolerance and acceptance of others. I also teach them that people who hate or are anything but completely nice including other minorities, etc. are missing out on some great things in life because in order to be like that, they close themselves off. Every time I do things like that, I feel better. We traveled to New Zealand this summer and everyone we came into contact with was very nice, happy, etc. If most people here were like that, our lives would be different all day long, everyday.

That man and his crowd are evil. There's no other way to put it. I want you to have a good day - I am going to go out of my way to do something extra for someone today.

given 'free reign' to discriminate, but don't let them have 'free reign' to pass antidiscrimination laws.

Remember that he was TWICE charged AND found guilty by the Federal government for housing discrimination in NY. His father was just as racist.
