Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to 'Step Back' From Royal Family
Source: New York Times
Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, announced on Wednesday that they would step back as senior members of the royal family and split their time between Britain and North America.
The decision was announced on the couples Instagram account, and was made after many months of reflection and internal discussions, they said. The couple added that they intended to carve out a progressive new role within this institution and become financially independent.
Though the statement gave no indication of where the couple would spend time in North America, speculation quickly grew that they would go either to Canada, a commonwealth country that they recently visited, or Los Angeles, where Meghan is from.
This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity, the statement said.

Will not be rubbing shoulders with Andy so often, I'm thinking.

Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage, the palace said in a statement. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.

(102,292 posts)LOL. Just because something is on an IG account it is irrevocable when faced with the Palace's and the Grey Men's wishes? The late Princess Di is laughing at the thought.

(1,568 posts)but after reading some of the responses from official royal family sources and also from the public, I totally can understand why they want to distance themselves.

(12,597 posts)find out that being financially independent is a lot easier said than done - especially when he is accustomed to a certain lifestyle.

(27,813 posts)No idea if that is true or not (though they were just there), but that doesn't shout financial independence to me.
I kind of enjoy royal-watching; if they want to do it their own way, fine, but it seems to me that they should use their influence in the best way possible.

They will negotiate the separation, things like who pays for round the clock security and exactly how many functions they need to attend.

(3,608 posts)Harry did inherit a lot of money from Diana's estate, though.
Living in the lower mainland of BC and on the island is becoming increasingly out of reach of people raised here.
Yet theyll come in financially independent and drop a few million on a house?
So noble, so noble.
If thats the case and they plan to be financially independent, they both better get some damn good jobs pretty damn fast.

I'm sure people would offer them for a lot of money for precious little "work".
Harry could easily endorse some luxury watches or something.

(4,316 posts)And would Markle have married him, were it not for him being a royal. I don't see him doing well away from the sheltered life he has had at the palace.

(26,080 posts)You literally sound like those racist wingnuts in the UK who also run around saying Markle is a "gold digger."
JFC she loved him, but DIDN'T want to marry him because he's a Royal.
They are leaving because of how she and their son are treated by the public, press, and the bigots in his father's family.

(4,316 posts)It could be true love, I don't know.
I see a lot of celebrity males choosing models for wives, that can't all be true love.
I watched a movie the other day called Carrington, a movie from 1995 about a kind of tom-boy woman, who did do some painting, who fell in love with a gay writer, Lytton Strachey. A true story. When he died of cancer, she committed suicide. I thought that was truly a case of true love, albeit very flawed, as there was no sexual love.
Just from reading about Harry's personality, he strikes me as the kind of kid you would find getting drunk at a sorority party, and she comes from Hollywood.
But it could be true love, no doubt.

(6,593 posts)Did anyone actually think he'd stand back and allow his wife to be torn apart too? JMHO, I applaud Harry and Meghan for separating themselves from 'The Firm' and the royal palace. TBH, why would they WANT to stay? I certainly wouldn't.

(15,286 posts)what he and his wife do? They should renounce their station, get jobs and be financially independent if that's what they want. They should also understand that they won't be living the life of the rich and famous afterward, too, and neither will their son.

(6,593 posts)An online blogger writes that "most accounts" say that before Christmas, Harry told Prince Charles about their intended changes. Charles asked Harry to send along an outline of their plans but they delayed for fear the info would leak (as it later did).
Before the leak though, Harry "requested a meeting" with his grandmother the Queen - - but his request "was swiftly blocked by courtiers." The next day is when Harry and Meghan made their announcement.
BTW - - WTF? Who would want to stay in a situation where "courtiers" can prevent you from speaking to your own Grandmother?!?
The things I mentioned can be found in the blog, just below the large picture of Harry and Meghan. But read the entire article, it's very interesting.

One happens over the breakfast/lunch/dinner table and the other is a meeting with the titular head of state.
